Cafe de la Paz in Berkeley - WOW.

Hey,

I went to Cafe de la Paz in Berekely last night, with a carnivore.

I've always wanted to check it out cause it looks like it has such a

nice atmosphere, overlooking Shattuck from the 2nd floor balcony.

Anyhow, it turns out they have 5 vegetarian entrees on the menu, 3 of

which they said they could make vegan. I chose the mushroom stew (and

asked for extra mild), and people - it was the best mushroom stew I

ever had. And if it doubt - the carnivore sitting acroos from me

eating salmon, said the salmon was really good but the mushroom stew

beat it....!!!! Now, how often have you heard a carnivore say that

your vegan dish is better than his meat/fish?????

It came with kinda boring but OK brown (!!) rice. However - the

salmon came with a side of vegan mango salad - and that was simply

delicious!!! If you ask to substitute some of the rice for a mango

salad, this would probably be the perfect meal!!!

The other options looked great too (one was tofu based), I'd love to

hear what people think of those, if you get to try them.

By the way, the waiter wasn't sure what vegan was (he asked me if

tofu was vegan... :-) but was VERY friendly and NOT afraid to ask,

and went to the kitchen to ask the cooks (about 3-4 times - on his

own initiative, every time he was not sure!!!) - and we KNOW he

really did do this, because we were fairly close to the kitchen and

overheard the conversation :-)

So, to sum up - HIGHLY recommended, GREAT atmosphere, VERY fast and

friendly service, GREAT food, and if you get there early and get a

window seat - than you've really hit the jackpot :-)
