Guest guest
Hello, Hello! Earlier this week several activists turned out for a Circus Gatti demo in Livermore. We got great media coverage from the Tri-Valley Herald Newspaper on Tuesday (on the local page) & Wednesday (on front page)--SEE ARTICLE BELOW. This would be a perfect opportunity to ask Livermore to ban animal acts within city limits. Not to mention, it is lonely out here in the Tri-Valley. Several activists in the area has expressed interest in starting a group. On Monday, May 19 at 7pm, there will be a meeting at the Starbucks (1472 1st Street) in Livermore to discuss group formation, goals & action. Please come! The more, the merrier! Best wishes, Christine empress_bean Phone: (925) 487-4419 --\ -- Protesters target circus in Livermore Local residents say they are concerned about the treatment of animals By Mike White, STAFF WRITER LIVERMORE -- Animal rights advocates said they will demonstrate today against a Circus Gatti performance at Robertson Park. Two shows are scheduled with " animals galore, " according to promotional material. The first two-hour show begins at 4:15 p.m. and the second at 7:30 p.m. The circus will be at Robertson Park, 3200 Robertson Park Road. Admission is $16 for adults, with discounts for kids and seniors. Children under 3 are free. Christine Morrissey of Pleasanton said she and a " small number " of activists will hold a demonstration at the park beginning at 6 p.m. She said they will pass out literature and hold banners. She said the protest was not being organized by any animal rights group but instead by local people worried about the treatment of circus animals. When asked about the alleged violations of the circus, Morrissey referred to allegations that have been made by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). No one was available for comment at Circus Gatti's office in Southern California. In cities where similar protests have been staged, including Eugene, Ore., Gatti circus managers have been quoted as saying protesters were misguided and that animals were well-treated. Circus managers have been quoted as saying that Gatti has a good reputation for taking care of its animals. Morrissey said she is asking that Livermore ban animal acts within city limits. Mary Beth Binder of Livermore expressed similar sentiments in a letter to the Herald. " I urge the city to, in the future, allow only circuses that do not use animal acts. In this way we can all stop the capture and sale of wild animals to circuses and make sure they remain free in their natural environment, " she wrote. Meanwhile, Livermore police officials said no one had filed a complaint regarding Circus Gatti. Morrissey did not make any allegations specifically related to the circus that will perform in Livermore. _______________ The new MSN 8: smart spam protection and 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail
