Guest guest
If anything some one with good letter writing skills should tell McDonalds that if they truly are trying, for them to announce it on a commercial as much as they show the Mcmuffin and other products they advertise every second of the day. I am positive there is a McDonalds advertisement somewhere in the world at any given time. Why can't they take even .001% of there advertising dollars and spend it on real commercials announcing such products....Has anyone every seen one? Really that is the best way....Being Veggie shouldn't be treated like a unwanted stepchild.(sorry for that term if offends anyone) It wouldn't take much...just a scene of maybe some veggie teens buying a veggie burger....I'd be happy to consult or maybe one of you would or someone with TV writing experience. Guest guest
hey there. i just wanted to tell you all that I am in NYC right now and I was walking through Union Square last night and there was a McDonalds that was advertising for the McVeggie burger from TWO places. They had a huge sign on the window and then one hanging from the awning. i was pleasantly surprised. -lesley --- " Rey@sunflour " <Rey wrote: > If anything some one with good letter writing skills > should tell McDonalds > that if they truly are trying, for them to announce > it on a commercial as > much as they show the Mcmuffin and other products > they advertise every > second of the day. Guest guest
am i only the only person on this list who thinks that supporting mcdonalds is a bad idea? i would much rather that the vegetarian and vegan community directs their dollars to companies who aren't actively causing harm to children, forests, animals, and the environment. the " McVeggie " just sounds like yet another greenwashing scam to maintain market share as people jump off the meat bandwagon. vote with your dollars. support local and ethically run businesses, not mcdonalds. Guest guest
> am i only the only person on this list who thinks that supporting > mcdonalds is a bad idea? No! I don't eat at McD, and haven't for years, even before I became vegan. But I want to point out -- Veg folks are still a minority of the population. McD / BK are not making these products for *us* They are making them for the rest of the population who eat at their restaurants and want a " healthy " choice. I think it is a *good* thing to see multi-national corporations like McD / BK having veg options. It just makes veg food more accessible to a LOT more people. AND... when more veg burgers are eaten, less animal flesh burgers are eaten ... thus less animals need to die... So I'm all for the McVeggie & BK Veggie Burger. I hope they do really really well! I hope lots of people eat these veggie burgers instead of animal flesh burgers. I think it will be a long time before McDonald's or Burger King show up on vegdining.com as " veg friendly " but hey, this is a baby step in the right direction. Guest guest
Keep your friends close, keep your eneimes closer. If you really think about it and get smart about taking oppertunities to ask McD to somehow have an Honerary Vegetarian board member and help guide these people whom which have no idea what they are doing other than the job they were trained for. (if they do have one I am unaware) Especially during this new relese of the their veggie burger. Maybe someone who can quietly direct them into somewhat a better direction over all. And explain " hey were not here to take your jobs away, were here to help. " And I am sure any of us would do it free! Maybe since they are sooo wanting to try something new, only really because of sagging overall sales (from what I have heard in the media). That this might be ok...So..please can I sit in the NON Carnivorus section please. We need a good seed planted...right smack down in the center of one of the worst things for this planet ever! That has gotten way out of hand. Embrace the enemy! I am sure they think we are, so..embrace us! We all know WE DONT BITE!! -Rey on 6/7/03 3:30 PM, Steve Simitzis at steve wrote: > am i only the only person on this list who thinks that supporting > mcdonalds is a bad idea? i would much rather that the vegetarian and > vegan community directs their dollars to companies who aren't actively > causing harm to children, forests, animals, and the environment. the > " McVeggie " just sounds like yet another greenwashing scam to maintain > market share as people jump off the meat bandwagon. vote with your > dollars. support local and ethically run businesses, not mcdonalds. > > On 06/06/03, Heather in SouthBay <sbactivist wrote: > >> Southern California Residents: McVeggie Burger Now Being Served in More Than >> 600 California McDonald's >> >> In a positive development for animal lovers, McDonald's is now test-marketing >> a new McVeggie burger in Southern California. Guest guest
That's the same response that many people gave to the Burger King veggie burger. And here's my same reply: not everyone lives in a vegan paradise like San Francisco, and even those who do live in such places tend to travel. So it's nice to have alternatives when you're on the road, and this new burger is just one of those options. Sure, I'd love to support all the local and ethically run places that serve vegan food. Please tell me where they are near my parents' house in rural New York, because I haven't found any yet and I've been looking pretty hard... but they do have a McDonalds and a Burger King nearby, and it's nice when the whole family can pick somewhere to go out to eat together. Do I like the idea of giving McDonald's my money? Not really. But when faced with Yet Another Taco Bell Bean Burrito when I'm on the road, the differences become a little less clear. -Kim On Saturday, June 7, 2003, at 03:30 PM, Steve Simitzis wrote: > am i only the only person on this list who thinks that supporting > mcdonalds is a bad idea? i would much rather that the vegetarian and > vegan community directs their dollars to companies who aren't actively > causing harm to children, forests, animals, and the environment. the > " McVeggie " just sounds like yet another greenwashing scam to maintain > market share as people jump off the meat bandwagon. vote with your > dollars. support local and ethically run businesses, not mcdonalds. Guest guest
i understand and appreciate that outlook. however, the original post had urged members of a san francisco based vegan mailing list, who have plenty of options, to support mcdonalds. also, i would much rather that people all over the country would take a moment to remember the vegan alternative that everyone seems to forget: the food market. i logged 20,000 miles by car in 2001, and i almost never stopped for fast food. it's very easy to find tofu, fresh produce, and assorted vegetarian convenience foods (including brands produced in santa cruz) at markets all over the country. with a few extra minutes of advance thought and planning, one can avoid the artificial " necessity " of eating mcdonalds on the road. i ate an amazing tofu and avocado sandwich on a sprouted wheat bun in the middle of arkansas while on a cross country roadtrip, and i didn't have to financially support the clear cutting of rainforests or advertising that leads to the obesity of children. call me extreme or snobby, but the free market has more power and influence than anything else in america. now, this would be a different matter if mcdonalds were planning to shift their core business to an international health food chain. but they're not. they're the same old company with a new product to retain market share. in any case, that is simply my completely biased opinion. i just didn't want it to go unsaid. navigating the mine field of personal choice is never easy. Guest guest
Ditto, what Steve said, and one step further: I wouldn't set food in a McD's unless it was the only food left on the face of the earth. As long as they continue their current practices of such significant contribution to rain forest & other environmental destruction by way of massive beef production, and their continued contribution to obesity and general ill health of the masses who continue to eat all the other food they serve, I will be loathe to reinforce anything they do by giving them my money or encouraging anyone else to do so. (Not to mention their deceptive practice of selling meat-laced french fries). Don't deceive yourself: They are only selling a veggie burger because it will make them money and they know that. They aren't trying to be healthy. I travel enough to know there are plenty of options out there, for myself and my 11 yr. old son. I personally haven't been to a McD's since I was a child and my parents took me there. If you care about the planet and your fellow human beings who have succumbed to marketing that has resulted in ill health, go beyond what is convenient for you at that moment, be motivated to do as Steve says. Try a grocery store if there are no vegan restaurant alternatives. Countering McD's corporate assault on the world is worth the extra effort and perhaps the inconvenience. Marcy P.S. Does anyone know what the ingredients are of the veggie burget they sell? - " Steve Simitzis " <steve " Kim Flournoy " <kim Cc: Saturday, June 07, 2003 8:51 PM Re: [sfBAVeg] McVeggie Burger > i understand and appreciate that outlook. however, the original post > had urged members of a san francisco based vegan mailing list, who > have plenty of options, to support mcdonalds. > > also, i would much rather that people all over the country would take > a moment to remember the vegan alternative that everyone seems to > forget: the food market. i logged 20,000 miles by car in 2001, and i > almost never stopped for fast food. it's very easy to find tofu, fresh > produce, and assorted vegetarian convenience foods (including brands > produced in santa cruz) at markets all over the country. with a few > extra minutes of advance thought and planning, one can avoid the > artificial " necessity " of eating mcdonalds on the road. > > i ate an amazing tofu and avocado sandwich on a sprouted wheat bun in > the middle of arkansas while on a cross country roadtrip, and i didn't > have to financially support the clear cutting of rainforests or > advertising that leads to the obesity of children. call me extreme or > snobby, but the free market has more power and influence than anything > else in america. now, this would be a different matter if mcdonalds were > planning to shift their core business to an international health > food chain. but they're not. they're the same old company with a > new product to retain market share. > > in any case, that is simply my completely biased opinion. i just didn't > want it to go unsaid. navigating the mine field of personal choice is > never easy. > > On 06/07/03, Kim Flournoy <kim wrote: > > > That's the same response that many people gave to the Burger King > > veggie burger.
