Guest guest
To kasie maxwell " <kasie I agree that the medical profession always jumps to conclusions that your diet is making you ill when you're vegan. What puzzles me is why they don't jump to the same conclusions when they have sick patients who eat a " typical American diet " filled with meat, fat, sugar, and artificial colors and flavors! I've had a compromised immune system all my life, starting with allergies as an infant to almost all foods, including my mother's breast milk if she ate what I was allergic to. I almost starved but she managed to keep me alive with goat's milk (which I was allergic to) and donaterd milk from La Leche (what a wonderful group of women!) until she was able to relactate. In those days they didn't have the vegan rice formula that they do not for babies with severe allergies to cow's milk and soy. Anyway, I digress. I've always had health problems, whether I was a meat-eater, vegetarian, or vegan. I've been a vegetarian for many years and vegan for 3 years but my mother, despite having to care for me for many illnesses as a child when I did eat some meat, still always acts really concerned about my nutrition. There's nothing I can really do to convince her that it has nothing to do with my being a vegan, since I take supplements and don't overload my diet with protein that would conteract the effects of calcium intake. And I'm sure that's the case with many medical providers. I am a teacher and when I was a student-teacher, I was present when the teacher of my class was doing a unit on nutrition. Well, who produced the book they were using but the Dairy Association!!!! So when people are taught from a young age that to be healthy, one must eat animal products, it just gets ingrained and they can't let it go. Sasheei Re: Looking for Food recommendation/Supplement, help hair and gener... >Is Veglifes is a brand name? Veglife is a great brand owned by Solgar, a major supplement manufacturer. Although Solgar makes many vegan supplements, their Veglife line is totally vegan, which means no ingredients came from any animal products. You can buy them at many health food stores. I don't know about ones in the South Bay, except for Whole Foods in Palo Alto. But you can ask them to order it for you if they don't carry it on the shelves. Whole Foods also has the hemp waffles. They're pretty good. They're in the frozen section, but I can't remember the brand name. Some thing with " Life " in the title, I think. " Rey@sunflour " <Rey Re: McVeggie Burger >If anything some one with good letter writing skills should tell McDonalds that if they truly are trying, for them to announce it on a commercial as much as they show the Mcmuffin and other products they advertise every second of the day. Guess what Rey! They do have a McVeggie commercial. That's how I heard about it, from a vegan friend who saw it. He was really excited because here's how the commercial goes: A group of people are trying to decide where to go for lunch. One person suggests McDonald's and every else is grossed out and doesn't want to. But then that person says, " But they have a veggie burger! " And everyone gets excited and decides to go. So you know when McDonald's is insulting itself in its commercials that things have gotten desperate for it. I'm glad to hear about it. Maybe someone has a copy of it in an online format that you could see. And now...my most exciting news! I finally went to Golden Era Vegetarian Restaurant in San Francisco on O'Farrell Street and I have a new favorite veggie restaurant. It was amazing! Everything is really authentic, like a real Vietnamese restaurant, even the Pho soups, which my husband loved when he ate meat so many years ago, he declares to be just like the real thing. They even have vegan desserts like Flan! We finally went about 10 days ago and have been there 6 times since!!!! We'll go broke just eating there. If anyone wants dish recommendations, I can make some. But I haven't had anything bad yet. A few things are a little blander than others, but they really use spices and flavorings well, and they don't use the same fake meat products in their dishes, like some restaurants where all the chicken dishes have the same fake chicken in them. And because they're not Buddhist, they use onions and garlic and hot pepper, so everything has taste. I heartily recommend the Spicy Prawns, the Garlic Beef, the Broccoli Beef, and the soups. That's all from me for now. Emily
