Guest guest
Hello!I am going to drive up to Orland at the end of the month for the Farm Sanctuary's volunteer day. If you are interested, please let me know, so we can carpool and pack a picnic lunch. There are cooking facilities on the farm. If you cannot go this month, they will be having clean-up days the last Sunday of each month this summer and I hope to attend them all. I think Orland is a 2 hour drive from S.F. and the clean-up is from 9 until 3.My best,Jolie Pitch in with Farm Chores This summer, come join us for a volunteer day at one of our farm animal shelters. Whether it’s in sunny northern California or the beautiful Finger Lakes Region of New York State, you can make a difference for more than 1,000 animals rescued from neglect and abuse. Pitch in by making the animals’ homes cozy and clean by mucking barns, or take part in summer shelter projects like painting barns and fencing. There are many farm chores to be done, and your help is appreciated by ALL of the critters at the farm. If you would like to visit one of our shelters and volunteer on the farm, please e-mail activist or call the New York Shelter at 607-583-2225 ext. 229 and the California Shelter at 530-865-4617. There is currently no volunteer housing at the farms, and hotels are within a 15-minute drive of each of the locations. And don't forget — our New York shelter has relaxing B & B cabins for reservation throughout the summer. Ask for availability when scheduling your volunteer stay. California Shelter Our 300 acre California farm sits on the eastern foothills of the coastal mountain range near Orland. We are across the street from the Black Butte Lake and recreation area, 10 minutes west of Interstate 5. The farm is 30 miles west of Chico, and 100 miles north of Sacramento. Prior to Farm Sanctuary's acquisition of the property in 1993, it had been used for years by ranchers to graze sheep and cattle. While the property consists primarily of grassland, it is graced by the presence of a few Oak trees. During the winter, when northern California gets its rain, green grass covers the gently sloping hills, while in the summer, hot, dry weather turns the grass brown. Most of the 300 acres is fenced pasture, including a unique part of the farm which has been dubbed 'Pig Valley'. Pig Valley consists of a several ponds, along with willow and cottonwood trees, under which pigs can relax, wallow, and snooze. While our California facility currently has no overnight accommodations, construction of the " People Barn " was completed in 1998. With educational displays and a cruelty free gift shop, this beautiful facility has an outdoor pavilion which can accommodate large gatherings. From the open air pavilion, guests enjoy views of Farm Sanctuary on one side and views of a lagoon and the jagged black buttes which overlook Black Butte Lake across the street on the other. Guided farm tours are offered on Saturdays, and camping is available across the street at the Black Butte Lake campground. The California farm hosts special animal rights and educational events every year. For more information, write or call: Farm Sanctuary, P.O.
