Guest guest
The company would have you believe it's made from a mushroom like substance. It actually made from a fungus found in a British dirt sample, and grown in huge fermentation vats. The fungus that makes up Quorn, Fusarium venenatum, has nothing to do with mushrooms. It's been on sale in the UK for over 10 years now and I have some friends who love it, but have also heard that it can make some people really sick (but this could also be hype/FUD from the meat industry.) I've never tried it myself as it's not vegan (or wasn't when I was living there.) Report back if you try it Chris powellkristy [powellkristy] Sunday, June 15, 2003 10:34 AM sfBAVeg [sfBAVeg] Quorn? Hello, I just saw a new line of produts at Mollie Stone's called Quorn. They have chick'n nuggets, patties, etc. I am wondering what you guys can tell me about this product. It said on the back of the box that it's the meat substitute craze in Europe, and it seems to be different from other meat substitutes. Thanks! ~Kristy BAY AREA VEGETARIANS (BAV) is a community group for veggies to network & find support. " Related to this, there is a " new " (?) product at Whole Foods, chicken nuggets and patties that contain " mycoprotein " which the label says is " mushroom protein " . " Myco " usually refers to the under-ground matter of which the mushroom is the spore carrier. It hardly needs to be farmed, apparently there are miles of it underfoot. Unfortunately, the product also contains egg whites, so I didn't try it (being vegan). Does anyone know about this stuff? Anyone tried it? Guest guest
it's my understanding that quorn contains egg whites, so if you're vegan, you might want to check this out before consuming their products. also, here's a vegetarian times article that pokes holes in the claims against quorn: http://www.vegetariantimes.com/magazine/view.asp?article=472 scroll down to " quorntroversy " . Guest guest
We tried the Quorn nuggets a while back. They are not vegan, but in the interests of science I tried a few anyway. Neither my husband nor I were very impressed, and we wouldn't buy them again even if they were vegan. Plus, the whole " mycoprotein " thing is unproven which in our books means " better safe than sorry " so we'll pass on them.
