Guest guest
Summertime has arrived & so has the Alameda County Fair! For many years, the Alameda County Fair has 'exhibited' exotic and wild animals in Pleasanton. Thanks to the hardwork of Eric Mills and many other dedicated activists the Alameda County Fair Association has decided this year not to 'exhibit' bears, lions, monkeys or alligators. However, several other animal displays continue. This year the Fair has 'performing' sea lions, camel rides, confined antelope and fallow deer among other animals. Since the Association has made positive strides to cut out some of the performing animals in 2003, this would be the perfect time to ask for a written policy to ban all such animals acts at the Alameda County Fair. We can make this happen! Please contact the Alameda County Fair Association. Thank the Association for its decision not to have bears, lions, monkeys and alligators this year and ask that a ban on all exotic/wild animals acts be put in place: Alameda County Fair Association 4501 Pleasanton Ave Pleasanton, CA 94566 Fax: (925) 426-7599 Comments: info Please ask Supervisor Haggerty to ban exotic/wild animal displays at the Fair and throughout Alameda County: Supervisor Scott Haggerty Alameda County Board of Supervisors 1221 Oak Street Suite 536 Oakland, CA 94612 Phone: (510) 272-6691 Email: district1 Letters to the Editors are needed to express disappointment over the Alameda County Fair allowing exotic/wild animal displays. So, why are animals like camels and sea lions on display at the Alameda County Fair? The answer is simple: profit. Using wild animals for entertainment purposes is unacceptable. The income-driven animal exploitation at the County Fair sets a terrible example for future generations and their relationship with non-human animals. Certainly, it is not in the best interest of humans or animals to carry on such displays. For display acts, wild animals are confined to small spaces—-denied of the ability to roam free in their natural habitats. Furthermore, there have been many incidents where animals on display have attacked patrons. The success of the Alameda County Fair does not hinge on exhibiting wild or exotic animals. There are plenty of other ways for children to learn about wild animals (i.e. the internet, books and videos) and a plethora of other ways for fair organizers to make money. A ban on exotic and wild animal displays is long overdue at the Alameda County Fair.” To learn more about East Bay Animal Advocates, please visit eastbayanimals, email eastbayanimals, or call (925) 487-4419. _______________ MSN 8 helps eliminate e-mail viruses.
