I really appreciate it and I now feel totally confident that I can raise the puppy vegan (if not the cat). Very many thanks again for all the super-useful info! Hi folks, I was wondering how vegan pet owners handle the question of what to feed their pets, specifically dogs and cats. We are currently fostering a beautiful stray puppy and I have so far been unable to find any vegan dog food. We also have a cat and have long been feeding him a dry food containing animal products. Again, we have never been able to find any vegan cat food. And then there is the question of whether it is actually healthy to feed dogs and cats a vegan diet? Anyhow, I would be grateful for any tips or experiences any of you would like to share on this subject. Thanks! Joanna I have fed my dogs Natures Recipe vegetarian kibble for years and they seem to thrive on it. It is now called " allergy " recipe. Also Wow Bow has vegetarian dog food and treats. These both meet all the requirements for dogs. I'm not sure about cats but I know a lot of people who have vegan cats. There's an additive called Vege Cats that can be added that has all the nutrients needed. A cat person can probably give you more info. Two of them became vegan about 5 or 6 years ago. They were adults then, now they are 12 and 10 years old. The 3d dog was taken from a shelter at age of 5 months and became vegan right after leaving his cage in LA shelter. Now he is 4 years old. All of them are healthy and happy. They have very good shiny fur and good teeth. At their age they don't have any lumps like many of their not vegan mates do. We give them commercial vegetarian dog food (the ingredients list doesn't show any animal products). It is a balanced meal, which includes B12 and other necessary vitamins and minerals. We also used to buy for them veggie yeast for dogs (it has all amino acids, b 12 and creates acidic environment for the intestines). We also share with them our breakfast and dinner. For breakfast all humans get oatmeal with flax oil and non humans get the same oatmeal with crushed tofu pups or canadian veggie bacon. Dinner is cooked for everyone and it is usually pasta or beans or rice. Very often part of the meal is tofu. The dogs love tofu. They also love pasta with beans and tomato sauce and vegan sausage on the top, they like mexican food: rice, beans and guacamole. They love bean soups, lentils. Sometimes i make raw borscht from Juliano's Raw uncooked book. The youngest dog likes it so much and the other two would just drink the liquid from it. We use a lot of flax oil instead of olive (when the meal is already not hot). I get the dog food from Good Earth in Fairfax or recently i ordered it on line and it turned out so much cheaper and very fast. There are lots of companies which would sell on internet but they charge very high prices. here are the two types of canned dog food we give to our pets: Vegetarian dog Formular (from Natural Life) Vegetarian Feast Dinner (from Pet Guard). You can order the food from those manufactures or get it from health food stores, they usually charge less then manufactures and you can special order from the stores with 10% discount. The least expensive way to get canned vegetarian dog food is the one which i just recently discovered: http://www.epetpals.com/vegetarian_dog_food.htm They have the best prices. I also got a book " Vegetarian Cats and dogs " by James A.Peden. I bought it on line some time ago. My experience shows that being vegan doesn't deprive or hurt our companion animals: they are healthy and playful and intelligent. Good luck!
