Guest guest
Last year the Alameda County Fair featured Bengal tigers and American black bears performing " tricks " three times a day for an enthusiastic audience in the Pleasanton summer heat. In previous years there were elephant rides, photo ops with a baby chimp, " The World's Biggest Alligator, " and other exotics, all inappropriate for a county fair setting. The constant travel, unnatural living conditions, and performance-on-demand are all very stressful on the animals. They (and we) deserve better. For the past year, ACTION FOR ANIMALS has been working with the Fair Board and the Alameda County Board of Supervisors requesting a ban on such exhibits. And finally, a good first step: THE ALAMEDA COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS HAS SCHEDULED A PUBLIC HEARING FOR MONDAY, JULY 28, 1:30 P.M. ON THE PROPOSED ORDINANCE. THE HEARING WILL BE BEFORE THE BOARD'S P.A.L. SUBCOMMITTEE (PERSONNEL/ADMINISTRATION/LEGISLATION), COMPRISED OF SUPERVISORS KEITH CARSON AND NATE MILEY, AT THE COUNTY ADMINISTRATION BUILDING, 1221 OAK STREET, OAKLAND, CA 94612, FIFTH FLOOR. Letters of support are needed NOW (to the address above--ask that copies of your letter be given to all Board members), and all animal advocates are encouraged to attend. Should you have any questions, please call Eric Mills at 510/652-5603. And please confirm your attendance with me, should there be a date change. Thanks!
