The definition of " victim " according to my online dictionary (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=victim) <http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=victim)> is: 1. One who is harmed or killed by another: a victim of a mugging. 2. A living creature slain and offered as a sacrifice during a religious rite. 3. One who is harmed by or made to suffer from an act, circumstance, agency, or condition: victims of war. 4. A person who suffers injury, loss, or death as a result of a voluntary undertaking: You are a victim of your own scheming. 5. A person who is tricked, swindled, or taken advantage of: the victim of a cruel hoax. Clearly, the ducks are the victim's under the definition of #1 above, as they, not the producer, is getting killed. Under #2, again I think the only creature getting slain are the ducks. Now, under #3, the producer may be " harmed " insofar as economically, but I take issue with the conclusion that it would be wrong to do so; after all, history is littered with companies and individuals harmed when the production of substances later found to be poisonous or harmful to public health was halted (i.e. Monsanto and dioxin, PCBs etc, pot growers and marijuana, Coca-cola and cocaine). As for #4, I don't see how that applies, as this is I agree involuntary on the producers part, but see #3. As for #5, adequate pictures and video footage exists to demonstrate the deplorable conditions these animals are kept in, so I would have to argue that the producer of this " product " is well aware of the situation they are kept in, and is not being tricked. So who again is the victim? I am wondering what " dictionary " you may be referring to. And as for your first contention, diners for the most part are completely unaware of the source of their food and would decide in a New York minute never to touch foie gras if the San Jose Mercury News had the backbone ( " Firmness; moral principle; steadfastness " ) to publish even one picture of a man holding down a duck while forcing a 12 " tube down its throat. Articles such as yours merely cause a furor and raise the plight of the animals to an even higher level of consciousness. These are defenseless creatures. Try explaining that to your children while you also explain how its not nice to pull the cats tail. Actually I should be glad you wrote this; now I can email all my friends at our big campus in Santa Clara (thousands of them, in fact) a link to the www.nofoiegras.org and www.gourmetcruelty.org websites first thing Monday morning; they all read your paper because it is sold in our lunchroom.
