Mercy for Animals:

Media Coverage: Group Calls For Boycott Of Egg Industry

March 1, 2005

Aired on WCPO ABC 9

A boycott of the egg industry has been called.

The group Mercy For Animals says it has uncovered gross abuse inside Ohio's

largest " animal care certified " egg farms.

Investigators for the group went undercover at the " Ohio Fresh Eggs " Farm and

say they found such things as starved hens, cramped living quarters and hens

with large, open wounds and infections.

On Tuesday the group went public with the allegations and are targeting Kroger's

grocery store chain in an effort to stop it from using the " Animal Care

Certified " stamp on all eggs they sell.

" We feel in light of their own ethics policy, that states consumers deserve

clear and accurate advertising on products they buy at their stores, that they

should stop ignoring two Better Business Bureau rulings that says this logo is

misleading to consumers, " Nathan Runkle, of Mercy for Animals.

The group hopes an all-out boycott on the egg industry would cut finances to

support egg farms they say are abusing its animals.
