The Edible Schoolyard Assistant Chef Teacher

The Edible Schoolyard at Martin Luther King Junior Middle School (ESY), a

project of the Chez Panisse Foundation, is an organic garden and cooking

classroom that involves students in all aspects of farming the garden along with

preparing, serving and eating the food. Experiential education in the garden and

kitchen is integrated into classroom curriculum. It awakens the senses and

encourages awareness and appreciation of the transformative values of

nourishment, community, and stewardship of the land.

The ESY Assistant Chef Teacher holds a position in the Kitchen Classroom at King

Middle School. This position requires an energetic individual with a passion for

working with adolescents, an extensive knowledge of cooking and kitchen culture,

fastidious attention to detail, and a vibrant appreciation for the life lessons

learned around the table.

Essential Job Duties:

Essential Job Skills:

<br>

 

<br>

The ESY Assistant Chef Teacher has a thorough knowledge of regional California

seasonality and a strong commitment to supporting local organically grown food.

Experience working with adolescents is a must, grounded in an uncompromising

dedication to advocacy for youth.

<br>

 

<br>

Successful teaching in the Kitchen Classroom requires a captivating, clear, and

comfortable public speaker, with awareness of food justice and ecological

literacy.

<br>

 

<br>

Minimum knowledge, skill, and ability:

<br>

 

<br>

1. Cooking Instruction in the Kitchen Classroom

<br>

 

<br>

- Ability to teach classes in the kitchen for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students.

<br>

- Engages students in learning through a sense of fun, spontaneity, and an

infallible positive attitude.

<br>

- Ensures that the cultural backgrounds of all students are respected and

honored.

<br>

- Is a thoughtful, attentive listener and ready conversationalist.

<br>

- Articulates personal passion and makes food come alive for students.

<br>

- Understands and fosters links between Kitchen classroom and King classroom

curriculum.

<br>

- Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.

<br>

- Has a minimum of two years professional cooking experience; service experience

a plus.

<br>

- Ability to research, plan, execute, and document recipes that are seasonal,

fresh, economical, and from scratch.

<br>

- Ability to create and use recipes that can be successfully prepared with

students in a class setting and that translate to students’ home kitchens.

<br>

- Ensures that recipes prepared in the kitchen classroom adhere to the highest

quality and taste standards.

<br>

 

<br>

3. Sustainable Food and Supplies Procurement

<br>

 

<br>

- Selects, orders, and purchases food, culinary equipment, and cleaning/laundry

supplies that adhere to standards of sustainability.

<br>

- Ability to understand and articulate the reasoning behind sustainable

procurement.

<br>

- Prioritizes timely use of produce from the Edible Schoolyard garden, including

weekly review of current and upcoming harvests and coordination with garden

staff.

<br>

- Builds working relationships with local growers and purveyors at weekly

Farmer’s Markets.

<br>

 

<br>

4. Direction, Communication, Leadership, and Personality

<br>

 

<br>

- Employs exemplary communication skills with ESY and Berkeley Unified School

District staff and greater community, in order to maintain healthy morale,

strong working relationships, and resolution of operational issues.

<br>

- Ability to balance taking direction with self-motivation.

<br>

- Derives satisfaction from a job well done, whether large or small.

<br>

- Ability to navigate a myriad of situations and circumstances daily, including

teaching and mentoring students, informing visitors and the press, engaging in

school and program meetings, training volunteers, and completing physical

demanding tasks.

<br>

- Embodies compassion, graciousness, and a can-do attitude at all times.

<br>

- Stays abreast of all local and national policy issues in the educational and

sustainable agriculture communities.

<br>

 

<br>

5. Facilities Management and Maintenance

<br>

 

<br>

- Ensures that the inside and outside of Kitchen Classroom are well kept and

welcoming to students.

<br>

- Maintains highest safety standards for food handling and equipment upkeep,

including refrigeration, supplies rotation, dishwashing, stoves and ovens, hand

tools and knives.

<br>

- Ability to complete minor repairs and carpentry tasks.

<br>

- Proficient in print, voice, and digital communication.

<br>

Additional Qualifications

<br>

 

<br>

- The Assistant Chef Teacher must possess a valid California Driver’s License.

<br>

Salary and Benefits

- $34,000 – $38,000, DOE
