Guest guest
I think this is the best outreach of any kind. I am glad this was the first letter posted on the Editorial section. This will help a lot of " animal lovers " realize what they are doing. This was posted by a vegetarian living in Texas, of all places.. sign, S. http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/editorials/2005-12-26-letters-pets_x.ht m Care about cats, dogs? Then stop breeding pets. I appreciated the tone of Robert Lipsyte's commentary " Let dogs be dogs, " but I must object to one point: Spaying or neutering your pet in the USA cannot be considered a mutilation as long as dogs and cats are killed daily by the thousands in our shelters for lack of homes (The Forum, Dec. 15). Killing animals because no one wants them is the ultimate mutilation. I speak from years of experience working in animal shelters and in veterinary hospitals and from the standpoint of someone certified in euthanasia. People who allow their animals to breed are the reason for this sad situation, whether they are bred for profit or by chance. Purebred animals die just the same way as mongrels and mutts do, by the way. I know because I have put many of them to sleep when the rescue leagues and no-kill shelters are full, or when they bite, or have expensive health problems, and when the shelter where I work is spilling over with animals. I came to this work because I love animals, having gone vegetarian in 1986 and relinquished all fur and leather goods from my closet. I desperately want to make the world a better place for animals. Part of that means telling you this hard truth. If you really care about dogs and cats, you will not allow them to breed. Kelly J.
