Guest guest
The office manager at my work just told me that the building management intends to do something to discourage pigeons from sitting (and mating) on the ledges outside our offices. She came to me to find out if I know of a humane method that works to keep pigeons away. I imagine the spikes I've seen around are out. The management mentioned something called " hot feet, " which apparently feels hot and the pigeons don't like it. That doesn't sound great, but not terrible -- except that it's apparently sticky and there's the possibility (we don't know if this happens) that a pigeon might get stuck. Does anyone have any experience with hot feet, or could you recommend a humane method that works? Write to me directly, and I'll post any useful info in one e-mail to the list. Thanks! Guest guest
We had a similar situation on our building. We have a TIC and our tenants upstairs and our partner wanted the pigeons taken care of. Since I didn't want them harmed, I took over the project to make sure whatever we did was humane. I had a pigeon expert come out to install a coil system to discourage the pigeons from roosting on our building's ledges - they did not have a nest on our building - they just liked hanging out here and it was only two birds. They cleaned the area (it was very poopy) and installed coils on the ledges where the birds had been roosting. According to the person who helped us, the spikes don't work reliably for birds that are very stubborn, and the " hot feet " concept is, simply put, electrocution - so it is not humane at all. Our two birds still hang out around here (we're pretty sure they were born/raised here, so it's always going to be home for them), but now they use the trees instead of our house to roost in. They were completely unharmed in the process and the people were kind in their dealings with me and my concern for the birds. We used a company called " Birds Away, Pigeons Away " (you can find them in the Yellow Pages) - they were very professional and I watched them work to be sure they didn't hurt the birds. Their work comes with a 10 year guarantee, so long as you don't remove or alter the coil installation. Hope this helps. Kasie
