Guest guest
Since the issue was created a couple years ago, I've been getting Oakland Magazine, a new glossy mag meant to compete with San Francisco's. I don't , and I'm always disgruntled when I receive it, because they constantly push and praise meat, meat, meat. I was soooooooooooooo thrilled to receive this month's issue and had a wonderful experience learning how you really can't judge a magazine by its cover. I've copied my letter to the magazine below. It explains what I mean. You can see the cover here http://www.oaklandmagazine.com/ and the actual review here http://www.oaklandmagazine.com/media/Oakland-Magazine/September-October-2006/Che\ ap-Eats/. I HIGHLY encourage more vegans to write to the magazine. They need to know we're a voice and a force in the community and that we very much appreciate their celebration of vegan fare. You can write letters to editor and copy the editor in chief: judy. Dear Editor, When I received your current September/October and saw the cover, I was dismayed that meat was again the feature of your magazine. It immediately reminded me of past issues that celebrated BBQ, Niman Ranch, etc. In my head, I started writing my cancellation letter to your subscription department. First, I turned to read the editor's letter and saw something about " vegan " options and decided to see what " cheap eats " you featured. When I saw the feature on Ital Calabash and realized that the burger on the cover was indeed vegan (and one of my favorite dishes in the bay area!), I've never been so happy to be wrong. Thank you for depicting a vegan restaurant so favorably. Too often, vegan food gets pushed into a disgraceful little box, leaving the impression that it's strange, inferior, or unappetizing. Nothing could be further from the truth. Regards, Colleen Patrick-Goudreau Founder & Director Compassionate Cooks P.O.
