Please see press release below: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Wednesday, September 20, 2006 San Francisco Green Party http://www.sfgreenparty.org Contact: Chin Chi 415-668-2252 San Francisco Green Party Applauds Compassion in Fashion SAN FRANCISCO—As San Franciscans celebrate the long-awaited opening of the expanded Westfield Shopping Centre, the Animal Advocacy Working Group of the San Francisco Green Party is sending letters to commend certain retailers for not selling fur, while urging other clothing stores to follow suit. In addition to the letters, demonstrations have been scheduled to take place in front of Bloomingdale's at noon of September 28, the Center's opening day, and 1 PM the following Saturday, September 30. Activists hope to raise awareness among retailers and shoppers about how fur hurts both animals and people. The San Francisco Green Party notes that recently J. Crew, Ralph Lauren, Ann Taylor and Nordstrom, four well-established fashion retailers, have officially decided to stop selling fur. Animal rights activists view the decision of Ralph Lauren and the other fashion retailers as a major step forward in the effort to end the sale of fur. " We commend their courageous and compassionate decision, " said Chin Chi of the Animal Advocacy Working Group, which drafted letters of commendation to these retailers. " We would like to take this opportunity to urge all other stores to do the same, and stride forward with the growing number of people worldwide who are striving to build a safer and more humane life for all, " said Chi. Animal rights activists note that the major fur item being sold in the US is fur-trim, much of which comes from factory-farmed foxes. " The animals are locked up all their lives in cages so small they can hardly walk. There they live a tortured life and are eventually slaughtered. Some are skinned alive, " noted Rosalind Lord of the Animal Advocacy Working Group. " Factory farms raising fur-bearing animals, like all factory farms, are a main source of pollution of our land, water and air. Like in the slaughterhouses, those doing all the dirty work are the poor or immigrant laborers. Fur traders are also increasingly raising their fur in Third World Countries and hiring children of the poor to slaughter the animals, which include dogs and cats, " said Lord. Hope to see you all there, - Rosalind
