Halloween Goodies

This Halloween, there's no need to be spooked by a lack of dairy-free

candy. PETA has just put out their annual list of today's tastiest

treats free of gelatin, carmine, and the other usual suspects. Here's

a glimpse:

Airheads taffy, Atkins peanut butter bars, Blow Pops, Brach's

Cinnamon Hard Candy, Charms lollipops, Chick-o-Sticks, Cracker Jack,

Cry Babies, Dem Bones, Dots, Dum-Dums, Fireballs, Goldenberg's Peanut

Chews, Hubba Bubba bubblegum, Jolly Ranchers (lollipops and hard

candy), Jujubees, Jujyfruits, Lemonheads, Mambas, Mary Janes (regular

and peanut butter kisses), Now and Later, Pez, Ring Pop lollipops,

Smarties (U.S. Brand), Sour Patch Kids, Starburst (jelly beans and

hard candy), Super Bubble, Swedish Fish, Sweet Tarts, Tropical Source

mini chocolate bags, Twizzlers and Zotz. The VegNews' staff also

likes Stretch Island Fruit Leather, and we're also pretty hooked on

Let's Do...Organic's new gummy bears and feet.

Throwing a creepfest? Put that grape peeler away and cruise by VegWeb

for recipes kids will love, including such delectables as Nasty

Gnats, Friendly Zombie Cupcakes and Chocolate Pumpkin Amazingness. Or

visit VegParadise for appetizing temptations like Vampire's Blood and

Dracula's Teeth. Really puts a new spin on the idea of faux meat,

right? Now that's scary.

V in the News

What is the Center for Consumer Freedom?

One ad campaign begins with the header, " PETA Kills Animals. " Another

poses the question, " Food Police Smashing Your Choices? " These ads

and a slew of other campaigns come from the Center for Consumer

Freedom, a reactionary group that runs such websites as FishScam.com,

which refutes the cautionary arguments against eating fish, and Trans-

fatFacts.com, which claims that these fats found in partially

hydrogenated oils and other common ingredients aren't really so bad.

The Center for Consumer Freedom is run by Richard Berman through his

public affairs firm, Berman & Co. This firm has ties to Ruth’s

Chris Steakhouse, National Steak & Poultry, Sutter Home Winery and

Philip Morris (which owns Kraft Foods and Oscar Meyer). Anyone who

remembers Newt Gingrich's scandalous hauling before the House Ethics

Committee in 1995 may find it interesting that Berman, who served as

a lobbyist for Steak & Ale Restaurants, had donated the $25,000 that

brought Gingrich's ethics to question. Learn more about the CCF and

watchdog group SourceWatch.org.

Eating Veggies Could Improve Memory

If you've ever heard or uttered the statement, " I'm having a senior

moment, " perk up. A recent study published in Neurology this month of

nearly 2,000 older people found that those who consume 2.8 servings

of vegetables a day experienced a slowing in the decline of their

cognitive sharpness by 40 percent, as compared to those who consumed

less than one serving a day. Tests gauged short-term and delayed

memory. Researchers found that fruits didn't alter results as veggies

did, perhaps because of vegetable's higher amounts of vitamin E. You

can load up on this powerful nutrient by eating healthy servings of

spinach, kale and collards.

Whole Foods Institutes New Animal Welfare Seal

A recent article in the New York Times reported that Whole Foods

Market will begin carrying a line of meat products labeled â

€Š" animal compassionate.†Although the cost will be almost

double, the availability of humanely treated meat products is

expected to attract foodies and animal lovers alike, said the Times.

No producers currently meet the standardsâ€â€which Whole Foods

hasn't yet publicly outlinedâ€â€but you can find out about the

company's other welfare standards by visiting their website.

Recipe this Month: Curried White and Sweet Potato Pancakes

Celebrate the potato harvest this fall with Jill Nussinow's delicious

recipe for Curried White and Sweet Potato Pancakes from The Veggie

Queen cookbook. Jill will have you eating locally and in-season from

Spring to Winter, with " anytime at all " recipes in between.

Makes about 20-30 small pancakes

1-1/2 pounds large potatoes, such as russets or Yukon golds, grated

1-1/2 pounds sweet potatoes or garnet yames, grated

1 large onion, grated

1 tablespoon egg replacer mixed with 1/4 cup water

1/4 cup all purpose or whole wheat pastry flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon curry powder

2 tablespoons canola oil

1. Mix the potato, sweet potato and onion together well in a large

bowl. Squeeze out any excess liquid and drain. Add the egg replacer

mixture, flour, baking powder, salt and curry powder and mix well.

2. Add 1 tablespoon of oil to a large nonstick skillet over medium

heat. Place 1/4 cup batter for each pancake into the skillet. Cover

with a lid until the bottoms are golden brown, about 5 minutes. Flip

to the other side and cook until golden brown. Serve hot with

chutney.

Your Say: Good Medicine

Last month we asked, " What's the best way to convince others to go

veg? " Many of you consider teaching by example more effective than in-

your-face activism. You told us how your skin glows and how you

effortlessly ward off extra weight. We heard from professionals,

parents, full-time activists and even one woman who has stayed vegan

for 44 years. Taking the prize, an Essence of Ahurani Spa Basket,

nurse practitioner Caroline Trapp told us how she helps patients

realize that eating right will do a body better than eating pills.

" My role in primary care affords me the perfect opportunity to talk

to people about veganism. I work with victims of diabetes. Their main

complaints? High blood sugars, blood pressure and cholesterol,

requiring medication. Erectile dysfunction, also requiring

medication. Weight gain, caused by diabetes medication such as

insulin and diabetes pills. And, of course, the high cost of

medication. I respond to these complaints quite simply with this

advice: Go vegan.

Health and money are powerful motivators to urge people to adopt the

world's best diet. It’s like what my friend Delisa Renideo, a

vegan cooking instructor, has to say. 'A healthy diet is good

medicine, but it does not have to taste like medicine.' To this I add

that a healthy diet also costs less than medication, and has none of

the side effects! "
