Dear fellow Californians,

 

On behalf of Earthjustice, I strongly urge you to go to the polls

tomorrow and vote NO on California's " takings " initiative,

Proposition 90. It would allow factories and developers to ignore new

state or local laws that protect our homes, our children, and our

environment, unless taxpayers pay the companies to comply. This

legalized extortion initiative would take away our rights by giving

irresponsible speculators a right to pollute and extract

unjustifiable profits at the expense of nearby people, property, and

the environment.

Proposition 90 would create a new, massive taxpayer-funded

entitlement for corporations and speculators that have not lost any

property rights. It would force the state and local communities to

repeal needed safeguards in order to avoid unlimited, multi-billion

dollar demands for payment. The result would be a fiscal and

environmental disaster.

 

The extreme nature of Proposition 90 is demonstrated by the

opposition from at least 70 newspaper editorial boards, virtually

every environmental group, and a wide range of taxpayer, homeowner,

public safety, religious, civil rights, business, education, labor,
