Guest guest
Friends HH Dalai Lama will be in San Francisco, April 27-29. Thousands of Buddhists will be going to see him. I will be handing out leaflets asking Buddhists to become vegetarians. Would you like to help promote vegetarianism? It will take a relatively small effort, and could have a big impact. HH Karmapa recently asked anyone who considers themselves to be his student, to stop eating meat, or at least reduce their meat eating. He also wants them to stop selling meat. He is requiring all his affiliated centers and monasteries to stop buying, cooking, and serving meat. Most practitioners have not heard about this. We are going to tell them. Many people have great respect for HH Karmapa. When they hear about his message, some of them will stop eating meat. HH Dalai Lama made a speech to Tibetans last year, in which he asked them to reduce their meat consumption, and to stop the trade in wild animal furs. Unfortunately, this speech is not yet translated into English. I'm asking translators if they could do this. If someone translates this speech by the time of HHDL's SF visit, his message can be in the leaflet. There have always been vegetarians in the vajrayana tradition, such as Patrul and Shabkar, but they have been a small minority. Now things are changing. Young Tibetans in the exile community have started organizations to promote animal rights and vegetarianism. They have opened Tibetan vegetarian restaurants in India. Thousands of Tibetans have gone vegetarian, including some monks. Chatral Rinpoche's teachings on vegetarianism are being published (he's the regent of HH Dudjom Rinpoche). Can leafletting influence people? Yes. Vegetarian activists say that every time they hand out literature at college campuses, shopping areas, and events, some people decide to become vegetarians. Please help spread the vegetarian message. Let's help animals, people and the earth. How you can help: Contact me to help with leafletting. Pass this email along to anyone you think may be interested: vegetarians, dharma practitioners, translators, whomever.
