Guest guest
Hello Animal People, I received a notice from In Defense of Animals suggesting setting up a meeting with the office staff of one's local State Assembly Member to help " kill " the kangaroo killing bill currently working its way through the State Legislature. I live in Fiona Ma's District. I am free on Fridays for the summer. Are there any other constituents of Fiona Ma who would like to join with me in trying to stop SB 880 by talking with Fiona Ma's staff at the local level on a Friday? Please respond. Thanks. Below is a copy of the relevant portion of the email from IDA. Sincerely, Bonnie Knight, San Francisco Correction Notice: California Assembly Still Considering Kangaroo-Killing Bill Please " Take Action " to urge your Assembly member and Governor Schwarzenegger to reject SB 880 IDA recently sent our California members an alert stating that the state legislature had passed SB 880, the bill that would reverse California's 37-year-old ban on kangaroo leather imports, and that it all it needed to become law was Governor Schwarzenegger's signature. However, we recently found out that the Assembly has not yet voted on SB 880. IDA apologizes for misinforming our members about this detail. However, we would like to emphasize at this time that we can still stop this bill in the Assembly and save the kangaroos. 1) _Please " Take Action " to urge your Assembly member to vote No on SB 880._ (http://ga0.org/campaign/sb880_assembly/wnbg7gkrf3etixd?) 2) Governor Schwarzenegger is already accepting comments regarding SB 880, so _please also " Take Action " to urge him to veto this bill_ (http://ga0.org/campaign/sb880_gov2/wnbg7gkrf3etixd?) . Also follow up with a phone call. You don't have to speak with anyone directly: you can make your opinion heard simply by calling (916) 445-2841 and pressing the keys 1, 2, 1, 2. 3) Schedule a meeting with your Assembly member at his or her local district office. Meetings with your elected officials have a personal appeal that letters and phone calls do not, and it's not as difficult as you may think. You certainly don't need to be an expert on kangaroos: just express your opinion on SB 880. Follow these steps to have a successful meeting: - Find four or five other constituents in the Assembly member's district who are against SB 880 to go with you to the meeting. To locate your district's boundaries, click _here_ (http://www.assembly.ca.gov/defaulttext.asp) and enter your address. - Call your Assembly member's office to set up a meeting date and time. There is no need to insist on meeting directly with the Assembly member, as staff members have great influence on how their boss will vote. Thirty minutes should be enough time for this meeting. - Bring materials about SB 880 to the meeting, along with your own letter explaining your concerns. Before the meeting, plan what each person in your group will talk about to prevent repetition. During the meeting, be sure to stay on topic and avoid confrontation: simply express your concerns, keep a positive attitude, and respectfully ask that your Assembly member vote no on SB 880. __ ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour
