Guest guest
I apologize for the multiple posts... in my original post, I inadvertently omitted some of the contact information. Following is a an improved sample letter, and the complete list of contacts. (The ones at the end, beginning with A Different Light, are the new ones.) Again, please contact them even if you're not gay, just alter the letter as desired. I know this is a bit of work, but I think we have a good chance at success. Thanks! **SAMPLE LETTER** As a member of the San Francisco gay community, and an advocate for animals, I’m contacting you to ask you to discontinue your involvement with the Gay Rodeo, due to the unnecessary suffering it causes the animals. • Rodeo animals are not aggressive or “wild” by nature. During the bucking and bull-riding events, the animals are provoked to buck violently by the use of “flank straps.” These are tightly cinched around their abdomens, causing the animals to buck vigorously to try to rid themselves of the extreme discomfort. The rodeo organizers even brag about the result of the pain and stress they cause the animals: “…the unpredictable bull is known to come looking for the rider when the ride is completed.” www.bayarearodeo.com/Rodeo2007/BullRiding.html • In other events, terrified animals -- sometimes babies – desperately run for their lives while being chased. • The violence and high-speed running can result in injuries to the animals. • The transport, confinement, unfamiliar surroundings, and pressure to perform unnatural acts can all cause stress and fear for the animals. Though the Gay Rodeo is apparently less cruel than traditional rodeos, and has higher standards for its “animal welfare” rules, it is still cruel and unnecessary, and penalties for violations are insufficient. In traditional rodeos, rules are commonly flagrantly violated and not enforced -- electric or wire prods are used to shock the animals out of the chutes, caustic ointments or burrs in the flank straps are used to enhance bucking, and wounded animals often go without veterinary care. I’m not familiar with the techniques used behind the scenes in the gay rodeos, but the potential for further abuse is disturbing. Please consider whether such treatment would be acceptable if the animals involved were dogs or cats. Farm animals have the same capacity for fear and pain. I believe that gay people should have more compassion toward others who are oppressed and abused, and we can use our creativity to find other ways to entertain ourselves without harming others. For more information on traditional rodeos, please visit www.bucktherodeo.com or www.rodeocruelty.com. Please be aware that local animal advocates -- gay and straight -- will be actively working to educate the gay community about this issue, as well as boycott and protest the rodeo and its sponsors. Thank you for your consideration for the animals. **CONTACTS** The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Inc. 584 Castro Street PMB#392 San Francisco, CA 94114-2594 (415) 820-9697 http://thesisters.org/contact.html NOTE: they are apparently not involved this year, but please thank them and ask them to continue to not participate in the future.
