Guest guest
I recently had a discussion with an owner of the new " healthy, " organic Castro restaurant " Frisee " asking him to follow through with a Bay Area Reporter article's promise that they would have vegan options. They have now announced a 3-course vegan meal beginning December 3 http://www.friseerestaurant.com/coming.html. I've long been frustrated by the lack of healthy vegan food in the Castro neighborhood, so I hope they do a good job, and that the vegetarian community supports their efforts! I also asked the owner to consider offering vegan wines, and he seemed open to it, and even mentioned that there is a Frey wine he really likes. This would be great, as (curiously) not even any of the vegan restaurants offer vegan wines. By the way, I recently noticed (and someone else mentioned it to me also) that the Cove Cafe (I believe) which is sort of a " greasy spoon " diner on Castro St. has been clearly announcing vegan soups on their outdoor specials board. It's terrific when regular restaurants recognize veganism, and also makes it appear more " normal " to the general public. During a recent visit to Portland, I noticed it was common practice there, and San Francisco is way behind. Guest guest
Regarding vegan wine: I've been in the wine business for over 20 years. It's the fining process that makes a wine not vegan. So if one could just find unfined wines or wines that were not fined with eggwhites, then you'd have a vegan wine. According to other Mendocino County winemakers I've spoken with about this, the fining process decreases a certain harshness in the finished product. Different appellations have different growing conditions. Inland Mendocino county has very hot summers, like weeks over 100 degrees which can create huge tannins in wines. The fining process reduces those tannins. I live in Mendocino county and although I support Frey vineyards organic and vegan proccesses, their wines are, in my opinion, just OK. I've had better. I want to recommend an amazing winemaker. His name is Rolando Herrera. He is a winemaker out of Napa with his own labels: Mi Sueno and Herrera. He is also the winemaker for a very small outfit, also in Napa called Longfellow. Rolando is one of the most talented winemakers making wine today, in my opinion. His red wines are unfiltered and unfined and are some of the most beautiful wines I've ever had. I'm not trying to solicit here, but if anyone is interested in getting some of these wines, you can reply to this post and I'll happily contact you. Maddy , " Andrew .
