pls encourage the organizer to have more vegan cooking nights,

here 's on that's based on a book I donated/lent to Moses  All the details of

this great cooking club is at the web site

http://www.frugalfoodies.org/

Tuesday, August 12th—after many requests for vegan nights at Frugal

Foodies, we’ll be dedicating August’s Cooking the Books Night to all

things vegan as we cook from “150 Vegan Favorites” by Jay Solomon.

Here’s what the back cover says: “Jay Solomon knows how to make vegan

food taste good. It just takes a bit of creativity — something Jay

has in spades. Here one of the most renowned vegetarian cooks offers

recipes that make food achingly good.”  This night will also be a

benefit night for Oakland Food Connection.  Check out OFC at http://

www.foodcommunityculture.org, and learn about how our benefit nights

work at http://www.frugalfoodies.org/benefit .

August (and the end of July) at Frugal Foodies

Hello Winnie,

August is the last full month of summer, and we’ll be enjoying the

bounty of fresh fruit and vegetables.  So please consider coming out

to Frugal Foodies, either in Berkeley or San Jose, and take a look at

what’s coming up both at the end of July and in August.  Promises to

be a good time (spots still available for every night!):

Tuesday, July 29th—it’s a rare fifth Tuesday so we’ll be doing a

Greatest Hits night from the past three months.  And we’ll also be

doing this night as a benefit night for a local nonprofit, and this

month it’s WORLD: Women Organized to Respond to Life-threatening

Diseases.  They work with women living with HIV/AIDS and do support,

education, and public awareness work with the greater community.  You

can read more about them at http://womenhiv.org/ and more about our

benefit nights at http://www.frugalfoodies.org/benefit .

Wednesday, July 30th— We are pleased to announce a very special

Frugal Foodies on this 5th Wednesday of this month!  It's a unique

experience that actually has us leaving the house...It is going to be

a Frugal Foodies WALKING TOUR through old, charming San Jose! We'll

start by preparing yummy finger foods at the house and then carry

them on our walking tour to end up at a relaxing neighborhood park.

The walk will cover historical grounds through beautiful

neighborhoods and tree lined streets. Please join us (barefoot if you

are daring!) for this one of a kind experience!  Great food, great

outdoors and great conversation for a very frugal $8, what more could

you ask for?

Tuesday, August 5th—it’s the first Tuesday of the month and we’re

going to once again try to do the letter T, or at least foods from

countries starting with that letter.  That means food from Thailand,

Turkey, Tunisia, Tonga, Togo, Turkmenistan, and the like.  Good

stuff.  So please consider coming out for one of our last stops on

our culinary journey around the world.

Wednesday, August 6th—International Cuisine Night- This evening will

feature comida de Mexico. That's right, a Frugal Foodies fiesta! Who

doesn't love tasty Mexican food, especially when made in good

company? Expect fresh guacamole, salsa and other regional favorites

with a vegetarian twist. Muy Delicioso!

Tuesday, August 12th—after many requests for vegan nights at Frugal

Foodies, we’ll be dedicating August’s Cooking the Books Night to all

things vegan as we cook from “150 Vegan Favorites” by Jay Solomon.

Wednesday, August 13th—it’s a night off for the Frugal Foodies crowd

in San Jose.  Not sure if they’ll be in China for the Olympics, on

hot dates out on the town, or just taking a break, but anyone

interested in Frugal Foodies in the South Bay will have to cool their

heels and wait another week for the good times that is Frugal Foodies

in San Jose.

Tuesday, August 19th—as the third Tuesday of the month, it’s Guest

Chef night and I’m very excited to have a first-time Frugal Foodies

Guest Chef.  Her name is Shyamali Khastgir, and she’s visiting from

India.  She and I met at a party and, besides enjoying her tasty

sprout salad and the plum chutney and plum jam that she had made from

the nearby tree, I learned that she has led a class called the

“Politics of Cooking” or “Cooking and Politics.”  In any case, I

think that you will find her delightful and will enjoy hearing about

her non-violence activism, her artwork, and her approach to food and

cooking.

Wednesday, August 20th—Special Ingredient Night! Mushrooms are unique

in that they take on the flavor of what they are cooked with. With a

large variety to choose from, we won't have a problem incorporating

this ingredient into every course. Yes, that's right, even in a dessert!

Tuesday, August 26th—it’s our Special Guest Ingredient night and

August means that all of our dishes will have berries in them.

Blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and maybe even

some of the more exotic ones.  Should make for a host of tasty treats.

Wednesday, August 27th—Breakfast for Dinner Night! This has been a

San Jose favorite for the last couple months. Tofu scrambles, pumpkin

pie pancakes and homemade granola have been made on this midweek's

classic theme night. What will be on this month's menu? Come and be

pleasantly surprised!
