Dear xxx,

I believe OrganicAthlete is on to something. The powerful community that we are

building, the meaningful education we provide, and the extraordinary inspiration

that our members create is like nothing I've seen in the world of sports and

fitness. You can help us continue our passion for athlete activism!

OrganicAthlete celebrated its 5 year anniversary in August 2008. Growing from an

eNewsletter to an extensive list of educational resources and from a small group

of athletes to an international community, we've come a long way in those years.

Fruit-by-numbers

Ever wonder what those annoying little numbered stickers are on your produce?

They list PLU codes (Price Look-Up codes) that allow retailers to manage

inventory. Though the stickers often leave a residue and are a pain to peel off,

they can be used to quickly determine if that banana you’re about to buy is

organic, conventional or, gasp, genetically altered. The base codes are usually

4 digits long and specify a particular type of produce. If the code has a 9

prefix, it’s organic; if it’s an 8, then it’s genetically engineered: 4011

(conventional banana), 94011 (organic banana), 84011 (GE banana).

Flax is Fine for Meeting Omega-3 Needs

According to a recent study, plant-derived omega-3s are sufficient to meet

dietary needs. Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an important fatty acid that exhibits

cardiovascular protection and anti-inflammatory effects, is a precursor to other

essential fatty acids (such as EPA and DHA). Prior to this study, ALA, such as

that found in flaxseed, was believed to have a low conversion rate and was

considered to be an inferior way to meet nutritional demands.

Never Too Old to Benefit from Exercise

It’s no mystery that endurance exercise benefits aerobic capacity, insulin

sensitivity and heart health. In fact, the same holds true even in adults aged

60 to 75. In a recent study, older adults exercising 3 to 5 days per week for an

hour per session showed improved glucose metabolism, the same as in younger

people.

B-12 and Your Genes

Levels of B-12 in the body may be affected by a number of reasons including

intake, infection, absorption rate and the health of the digestive tract. A new

study has determined that B-12 status is partially determined by genetics as

well as by food or supplement intake.

Intense Exercise and the Flu

Intense bouts of exercise can weaken immunity, and that isn’t good news as we

approach flu season. Fortunately, a diet high in the flavonoid Quercetin has

been found to offset these effects by inhibiting replication of a broad spectrum

of viruses. Quercetin is found in abundance in a wide variety of fruits and

vegetables, including apples, berries, broccoli, onions, tea and many nuts and

seeds.

exercise
