Guest guest
Although our Thanksgiving dinner was a traditional dinner, it was also vegan. Here is what we had: Garlic mashed potatoes. (using coconut milk) Gravy (using vegan gimme lean sausage) Candied yams (using brown rice syrup, maple syrup and cinimon) Stuffing (crockpot style) Steamed veggies with homemade Tahini sauce Vegan fish (from http://www.vegeusa.com/Product5.html) homemade tartar sauce. (using nayonaise, garlic & relish) Garlic bread (made with olive oil and garlic granules) soy dream for desert. I know there was more but I can't think of it at the moment. I am doing this from work. Guest guest
Thanks Mosaic! I'm excited about thanksgiving too - it seems like such a lovely celebration. This may become a tradition. ) We've had a little look at it, but will research more. I like the idea of roasted vegetables so far (roast parsnips are just about my favourite food anyway, so they want to be there to celebrate with us!) I'm still thinking about what protein I'd like to try. We like baked marrow, etc, so the squash idea might be nice. I want to make sure the children will all enjoy it too, so maybe try it out ahead of time. We normally have baked marrow with soy mince and a tomato based sauce and cheese. Tonight we had that mince with some added split red lentils to add to the protein (it was with brown rice tonight) - that was really yummy. ) Also a friend told me on Sunday (talking about some of the things they eat) that if you cook cauliflower with millet and mash it all up when cooked it is a bit like mashed potato - she uses millet to aid digestion apparently. So I might try that ahead of time too to see if we all like it. I have some millet but haven't used it yet. That could be a part of our brown. I think it would be nice cooked in with the rice too. I think you'd class thanksgiving preparations as a BE raiser! ) Best wishes, Ceri ) On 5 Nov 2007, at 13:55, mosaic wrote: > hello Ceri, and welcome! > > you'll be glad to know that doing the steps as a vegetarian is > uncomplicated. Guest guest
No crock pot involved, but - As soon as I tried the Vegan Irish Sausauge recipe (FFVK 3/08) I knew what was going to be our Thanksgiving entree. Instead of sausages, I'm going to double or triple the recipe, and line a bog oval bowl with it and fill the center with a sage and apple stuffing, flip it over onto a cookie sheet and bake it . Similar to some of the tofu based " celebration roasts " you see in stores. Everyone's looking forward to it because we LOVED the flavor and texture of the fauxsages :-) I'll serve it with vegan gravy (Bryanna Clark Grogan's recipe - excellent) and homemade cranberry sauce. We always have roasted root veggies and mashed potato as well. I should probably test this brilliant plan first, but I like living on the edge! Hopefully we'll have an extra smiling face at our table this year because a new grandbaby is due this Thursday! Yet another amazing person to be thankful for! (My daughter and our new babe!) Guest guest
If you've never had a Tofurkey, I would recommend that you try it before you decide to serve it for Thanksgiving. I personally find them and all the Tofurkey products (I've tried their hot dogs and lunchmeat analogs) completely inedible. I was so disappointed when I made a Tofurkey for Thanksgiving one year and was unable to force it down. The whole thing went right in the garbage. Guest guest
Hi Kathy, The last four or five years, we've made a huge rustic pie with layers of kale, garlic mashed potatoes, carrots, leeks, and other traditional veggies. Everyone at our table (vegan and non) loves it, and it doesn't resemble a dead bird, which I like. This year, I'm looking for something a little different. I'm intrigued by this roasted vegetable cornucopia recipe from Vegetarian Times and might veganize it: http://www.vegetariantimes.com/recipes/9698?section= Does anyone know if the Pepperidge Farms puffed pastry is still made with hydrogenated oils? Anyone have a trans-fat-free puff pastry they'd recommend? I'd also love some crockpot recipes, as our stove is rather small and everyone wants cook for the big day.Jessica
Guest guest
Can you tell me what FFVK means? I'd love to try some other roast recipes. My first attempt at a seitan roast was a dismal failure! I have made faux sausages from the Vegan Dad Blog. There were good but I found out I don't like fennel (never really eat it in anything else but onmi DH liked them which is a plus). In Canada we already had our Thanksgiving. I always make a casserole out of Worthington smoked " turkey " roll. I add stuffing, eggs, evaporated milk, celery and onions and bake it. Not vegan and not really healthy but enjoyed by the veges and omnis at the Thanksgiving feast. , " Victoria " <wgsdkaos wrote: > > No crock pot involved, but - > > As soon as I tried the Vegan Irish Sausauge recipe (FFVK 3/08) I knew what was going to be > our Thanksgiving entree.
