Guest guest
January-February 2009 issue of Audubon features The Low-Carbon Diet by Mike Tidwell, who explains how a vegetarian diet can fight global warming at http://www.audubonmagazine.org/features0901/viewpoint.html & vegetarian resource page at http://www.audubonmagazine.org/web/vegetarian/ In addition to going meat-free, turning off unnecessary lights in high- rise buildings at night can reduce greenhouse gas emissions & conserve resources. Lights Out can reduce bird/building collisions (as birds may confuse lighted skyscrapers with stars as navigational cues) & increase the visibility of the night sky. Guest guest
Thanks Carmen, Lights Out for Birds is a great project! But there is far more that our society should do in terms of reducing energy waste and improving wildlife and human health as relates to night time light use. Please read this in-depth article about the negative effects of outdoor lighting on human and animal health. -> http://www.ehponline.org/members/2009/117-1/focus.html If you have outdoor lighting at your home or business, please do your part. Obviously, turn off outdoor lights when they are not being used or needed. Also, be sure that your outdoor lights are aimed to shine ALL light down, not upward and not sideways. The color of the light helps too; lightbulbs that produce " warm white " or " warm glow " colored light are better for the night time environment than " daylight " -colored light. I invite you to join Citizens for Smart Lighting SF to stay informed about the effort to reduce light pollution locally. smartlighting-sf/ > In addition to going meat-free, turning off unnecessary lights in high- > rise buildings at night can reduce greenhouse gas emissions & conserve > resources.
