Guest guest
I hope what follows isn't controversial. I read that PETA's person of the year is Oprah Winfrey. She did try a vegan diet and I believe she isn't a vegan anymore. Here is a blurb from her blog dated: May, 22th, 2008. " Wow, wow, wow! I never imagined meatless meals could be so satisfying. I had been focused on what I had to give up—sugar, gluten, alcohol, meat, chicken, fish, eggs, cheese. 'What's left?' I thought. Apparently a lot. I can honestly say every meal was a surprise and a delight, beginning with breakfast—strawberry rhubarb wheat-free crepes. " I have mixed feelings about a meat eater being PETA's person of the year, regardless of the fact that Oprah and PETA have both done very good work. Guest guest
Oprah did a show on Prop 2. Because so many people watch her show, that show did expose millions to thinking about how the animals they eat are treated. Beyond that show, if anythng, she has done a lot of harm, precisely because she is so watched and influential. Everytime she promotes animal products which she does both on her show and in her magazine, she influences millions of people to consume these products. She tried a 21 day health program which she did for health and to lose weight, not for the animals. And afterwards she went back to her old ways. She is constantly promoting eating salmon and chicken, etc. I suppose PETA thinks that by choosing Oprah, it might encourage her and perhaps she will open her eyes and heart more. I'm sure it is a strategic choice because she is who she is. If Oprah were to " make the connection " as she likes to say and " have a lightbulb moment " when it comes to compassion for animals, it would be huge. I absolutely don't agree with the choice in terms of merit. However, maybe in terms of a tactic, there is something to this. I hope so for the animals.
