Committee Announcement from Senator Hancock

Wed, 14 Jan 2009 19:22:11 +0000

Senator Loni Hancock

9th District, California State Senate

Dear Friends:

Yesterday, I joined Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg and Senate

Majority Leader Dean Florez in announcing the newly revamped Senate Committee on

Food and Agriculture. Today’s announcement ushers in a new era in California

agriculture policy. The committee, which historically focused on issues of food

production, will now expand its jurisdiction and look more broadly at issues

related to sustainability and safety, as well as animal welfare reforms.

I am delighted that I was appointed to serve on this newly tasked committee and

excited about the opportunity to expand our vision of agriculture. Through the

work of this committee we will have the opportunity to look at issues including:

· Food Safety

· Sustainable Farming

· Animal Welfare

· Food Security

We also launched a website in conjunction with the announcement to provide

information on the change and encourage public input in policy discussions at

www.californiasafefood.com. I hope you will log on and provide us with your

opinion.

The committee will be chaired by Senator Florez who has shown great leadership

as an advocate for improved food safety and legislative oversight in this area.

The other committee members include Senators Fran Pavley, Abel Maldonado, and

Dennis Hollingsworth.

Sincerely,

Loni Hancock
