Guest guest
Hi All, I've just joined this group and was surprised by the following para. in the welcome e-mail: 'A BRIEF HISTORY If the British didn't coin the word in 1862, we'd be the San Francisco Pythagorian Society, as people who followed a plant based diet were once known as Pythagorians.' So I sent the following query to the e-list of the Vegetarian Society of the UK (which I know was founded in 1847): > A communication just received from the San Francisco VegSoc states > that > the British coined the word Vegetarian in 1862. Does anyone know if > that's right, and if so what was our VegSoc known as in the 15 years > of > its existence before then? > BW > Patricia and the following reply has just arrived: 'The Vegetarian Society was formed in 1847. Documented on the Veg Soc website and was called that from day one. http://www.vegsoc.org/Info/developm.html But the word is obviously earlier because they would not have chosen something unfamiliar. The earliest quote I have note of is 1842 in a journal called The Healthian (Vol 1 Issue 5 April 1842). They are arguing that meat goes putrid quickly in the stomach whereas vegetables undergo a triple fermentation: vinous, acetous and putrid. (no I don't know what that means either) And they go onto say QUOTE We esteem this fact of the triple fermentation of vegetables of high importance, and one that, though caught at immediately by the advocates of the old regime, is of great and irresistible weight in the vegetarian advocacy. ENDQUOTE The word doesn't seem to be used here as a noun (Patricia we need your linguistic help here!) so maybe that was a later innovation. Lucy' So perhaps someone could make the necessary amendment to the website. By the way, I was delighted and flattered to have been invited to join this group! Is Jeanne still there?
