Guest guest
VegSoc-Talk Monday, June 01, 2009 11:44 AM RE: [VegSoc-Talk] Vegetarian history If you are interested in finding out more about the history of vegetarianism and non-meat diets, the Wellcome Library (where I work) holds original books, recipe books, pamphlets and posters/adverts from the present time back to the early 1800s in the UK (and even some dating from the 18th century, but my Latin's not up to translating the titles). A quick perusal of the titles links interest in a vegetarian diet to health and well-being, religious principles, the temperance movement, war-time diets, economic factors and animal cruelty (even as far back as 1819). The collection includes items by the Vegetarian Society and the 'London Vegetarian Society' (not sure if this is the same thing). You can search the catalogue at http://catalogue.wellcome.ac.uk/. A simple search on 'vegetarian' will give you a good flavour of the material. (If you want to get a feel of the titles through time, change the 'sorted by' to 'date' rather than 'relevance'.) (The Wellcome Library covers the history of medicine and wellbeing in its broadest sense, is open to all and is free to join). Best wishes Louise Many thanks, Lucy. I've passed this info on to the SF VegSoc e-list. BW Patricia The Vegetarian Society was formed in 1847. Documented on the Veg Soc website and was called that from day one. http://www.vegsoc.org/Info/developm.html But the word is obviously earlier because they would not have chosen something unfamiliar. The earliest quote I have note of is 1842 ---------- Checked by AVG - www.avg.com Version: 8.5.339 / Virus Database: 270.12.50/2150 - Release 06/02/09 06:47:
