 Dream a Little Dream

Ahhh, summer. Could we be more thrilled about our upcoming super-fun Dreamy

Summer Issue? No. What, exactly, is included in said issue? Well, just a little

something we like to call the DIY luau, the ultimate sundae, and the VN guide to

starting your own vegan business. Oh, and maybe all the fancy-pants tartares and

carpaccios your summer soirée guests could ever want. Are you into this whole

Twitter thing? Take a look at how Web 2.0 is shaping the future of

vegetarianism, and how you can make real change online. Yes, by " online " we mean

" from your poolside, wifi-enabled hammock. " Dog days indeed!

 VegWeb.com and VegNews Unite!

The VegNews team couldn't be more excited to announce that just this

week, we have acquired the world's largest vegan recipe community website,

VegWeb.com. Thirteen years ago, before any of us were permanently attached to

our computers or had imagined that we’d one day be “tweeting,†VegWeb.com

founder Yvette Ehler made a bold technological move for vegetarians around the

globe by starting the now-beloved website. After single-handedly administrating

the recipe-packed site ever since, today VegWeb.com boasts 103,825 members,

237,885 posts, and 11,662 recipes. Check out VegWeb.com for interesting forums,

delicious vegan recipes, and tons of tantalizing food photos. User beware:

browsing the site is nearly guaranteed to ignite hunger. We welcome the

VegWeb.com community to the VegNews family!

Abused Animals, Abused Workers

It's painfully clear that the force-feeding of geese and ducks in order to

fatten their livers to produce foie gras is cruel and unnecessary, but what

about the people holding the feeding tubes? A recent New York Times op-ed shows

that our feathered friends aren't the only victims of this gruesome practice.

Workers at Hudson Valley Foie Gras in New York routinely have to work for 22

consecutive days without paid overtime or time off in unsanitary conditions.

Keeping foie gras off our plates is a compassionate move for both human and

non-human animals.

Beautiful Buses

Well, OK, " beautiful " might be something of an overstatement, but for residents

of New York City and Toronto, taking public transportation just became an

educational experience. Animal-activist group Mercy For Animals recently

launched campaigns in both cities that feature pro-veg ads on transit vehicles.

Saturating such heavily populated metropolitan areas with a compassionate

message is a sure-fire way to raise awareness for the animals.

Puttanesca Scramble

Is there anything better than brunch? Actually, yes there is, and it's

vegan brunch, which also happens to be the title of Isa Chandra Moskowitz's

just-released cookbook. We could spend about as long flipping through the pages

of this tantalizing tome as we could scarfing down the amazing meals contained

therein. Go ahead and get started with this Puttanesca Scramble. Then, make sure

to check Café VegNews all next week to see which recipes we make for lunch, and

the chance to win a signed copy of Vegan Brunch!

Serves 4

What You Need:

2 tablespoons olive oil

6 to 8 garlic cloves, thinly sliced

1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper

flakes

1 pound extra-firm tofu, diced

4 Roma tomatoes, diced

2 tablespoons fresh thyme

2 tablespoons fresh oregano

1/2 cup mixed olives, roughly

chopped

1 tablespoon capers

1/2 teaspoon salt

What You Do:

1. Preheat a large, heavy-bottomed pan over medium

heat. Sauté the garlic in the olive oil until lightly

browned, about 3 minutes. Add red pepper flakes and tofu

and sauté for about 10 minutes, until tofu is browned.

2. Mix in tomatoes, thyme, and oregano and cook for

about 5 minutes, until tomatoes are a bit broken down

but still whole. Add olives, capers, and salt. Cook just

until heated through.

 Event Showcase

Speak Up!

Yes, it's awesome to get together with tons of like-minded people and get

recharged at a VN-sponsored conference. It's even better when the conference is

in the magical Midwest, and Their Lives, Our Voices on June 12–14 promises to

be a great event. Are you a Minneapolis resident? Want to attend? Email us with

your full name, and the first four respondents will each get a ticket!

Let's Jam

Join the fantastic team over at Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary on the 13th and

boogie to live music, munch on edibles provided by Isa Chandra Moskowitz, and of

course, take farm tours!

Let Live

Do you really need another excuse to visit Portland, Ore.? Well, if you do,

definitely check out the Let Live Conference, from the 26th to the 28th. This

VN-sponsored event is sure to be a hit. Can you say karaoke with Josh Hooten?!

Mike's Organic Curry Love

Trying to curry favor with someone special? Don't forget the secret

ingredient: love! Of course, finding love can be a little tricky, unless you

happen to be in the grocery store. Mike's Organic Curry Love sauces come in

three delicious flavors—Blissful Banana Ginger, Luscious Yellow Thai, and

Passion Red Thai, and each is a lovely experience. Clean ingredients, a cute

label that says " vegan " right on it, and some sultry flavors make these

ready-made sauces a perfect go-to for when you need to put on a scrumptious meal

in a hurry.

 VN Summer Sale!

It's summer (OK, it's nearly summer, but June 21 can't come quickly enough for

us!), and that means that any day now you'll be headed to the beach. So, what

does one need while relaxing in the sand? Of course, you'll want a handy tote

bag for your towels, camera, sunscreen, and reading material. Speaking of which,

beach reads are a must, as are seaside snacks. Hmmm, now where can you find all

of these things? Why in a VegNews gift pack, of course! Cookies, magazines, and

a T-shirt come bundled in an ever-so-chic VN signature tote. Even better, gift

packs are on sale all this month!
