But we urgently need your help! Please support our No Downers Campaign today. Downed animals are those too sick, injured or weak to stand - many as a result of the daily stresses they endure on factory farms. They lie on the ground wherever they fall and are denied food, water and veterinary care as they endure pain and terror. When they are moved, they are often kicked, dragged or pushed with forklifts and left to die a painful death. Recently, President Obama announced a new U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) rule that bans the slaughter of cattle who become downed at any time. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack called it “a step forward for both food safety and the standards for humane treatment of animals.†That’s progress - but our fight is not over yet. We must keep working to end the suffering not just for downed cattle, but for ALL “downer†animals. The greed-driven factory farm industry we’re up against has deep pockets and an army of lawyers and lobbyists. But, with your support, we can fight back and: Petition the USDA to improve a recent rule banning the slaughter of downed cattle by extending these same protections to pigs, sheep, goats, and other farm animals disabled by the trauma of factory farming; Block the factory farm industry’s attempts to overturn a California law protecting downed animals. This law serves as a model for other states and its repeal in the country’s largest agricultural state would undermine farm animal laws nationwide; Urge lawmakers, courts and agricultural officials to close the loopholes that enable this abuse to continue; and Continue to investigate stockyards on a regular basis to document and expose farm animal abuses. Your support has made Farm Sanctuary the nation’s leading advocate for downed animals. Please consider making a generous contribution now to our No Downers Campaign and ongoing defense of all farm animals. Farm Sanctuary started with the rescue of a downed animal so, for us, this campaign is deeply personal. Often, with just a little care, downed animals can be restored to health. And it’s your compassionate support for Farm Sanctuary that has given them a second chance at life. But, for every downed animal we have rescued, thousands more need our help right now. Please donate today. Yours for farm animals, Gene Baur President and Co-founder, Farm Sanctuary  Farm Sanctuary, PO Box 150, Watkins Glen, NY 14891
