MFA's Executive Director Inducted into U.S Animal Rights Hall of Fame Nathan Runkle, MFA's Executive Director, became the youngest person ever inducted into the U.S. Animal Rights Hall of Fame when he was honored with the award during the Animal Rights 2009 National Conference in Los Angeles, California on July 19th. The U.S. Animal Rights Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of animal rights for at least ten years and include such movement leaders as Cleveland Amory, Howard Lyman, Ingrid Newkirk, Peter Singer, Karen Davis, and Paul Shapiro. During the conference award ceremony, Mercy For Animals also took top honors in the " Most Effective Vegan Campaign " category for the organization's undercover egg farm investigations. American Dietetic Association: Vegetarian Diets Are Healthful, May Help in Disease Prevention The American Dietetic Association, the world's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals, has just released an updated position paper on vegetarian diets, concluding that such diets, if well-planned, are healthful and nutritious for adults, infants, children and adolescents and can help prevent and treat chronic diseases, including heart disease, cancer, obesity and diabetes. ADA's position, published in the July issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, represents the Association's official stance on vegetarian diets: " Appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. Well-planned vegetarian diets are appropriate for individuals during all stages of the life-cycle including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood and adolescence and for athletes. In the Vegan Kitchen: Portobello Burgers This quick, simple, delicious, and healthy recipe is perfect for summer BBQs. 4 Portobello mushroom caps 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon dried basil 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1 tablespoon minced garlic salt and pepper to taste Place the mushroom caps, smooth side up, in a shallow dish. In a small bowl, whisk together vinegar, oil, basil, oregano, garlic, salt, and pepper. Pour over the mushrooms. Let stand at room temperature for 15 minutes or so, turning twice. Preheat grill for medium-high heat. Brush grate with oil. Place mushrooms on the grill, reserving marinade for basting. Grill for 5 to 8 minutes on each side, or until tender.
