Guest guest
Just wanted to clarify. There are no doubt various religious traditions or lack of them reflected within the membership of SFVS, and I'm sure we respect them all--'live and let live.' But if the organization schedules events or makes decisions on the basis of religious preference, is that something you want to start doing? And if so, then how far will that go? If a Jewish religous holiday is accommodated, then how about the Jewish Sabbath? Or what about the Muslim Friday, or Ramadan, or the Christian Sunday? Or the Wiccan festivals? Etc etc. Toleration for various religious views is one thing, but planning on the basis of religous preference . . . is that a direction to go? If you accommodate or plan on the basis of one, then you need to accommodate them all, I should think. Dave
Guest guest
Dave's response strikes me as similar to the comments we've all received, at one time or another, from well-meaning yet ignorant non-vegetarians. " Won't cows take over the world if we don't eat them? " " You have leather on your sneakers so you're no different than me eating meat. " " Shouldn't you care about the lives of plants? " It's not all or nothing, there's no slippery slope, and there are NEVER any orientations, meetings, or non-holiday parties on Christmas or Easter. Please note, again, that I mentioned " major religious holidays " . As a Jew who sometimes goes to religious services on shabbat (the sabbath), I didn't ask that the event not be held on a Friday evening or a Saturday; I simply requested that the event not be held on the Jewish New Year, one of the holiest days for Jews, akin to the level of Christmas and Easter for Christians, just as I would oppose it being scheduled on any major holiday of whatever group helps make up the SFVS. I'm delighted and appreciative that Dixie was so gracious, accommodating, and inclusive. I am now, however, disappointed that Dave, who is a great guy, is being so backward on this issue.
