STEERING COMMITTEE MEMBER OF THE MONTH SUNDAY STREETS HITS THE WEST SAVE THE DATE: THE BIG RUMBLE Dear Neil, It's been a few months since our last newsletter, but there's been more action than ever here at the NEN. Below, you'll discover more about the exciting developments happening in the neighborhoods. Enjoy! The NEN Team NENtv VIDEO WINS AWARDThe nonprofit organization National Association of Telecommuni-cations Officers and Advisors (NATOA) has honored the NENtv City Hall Victory Garden video with second place in the environmental category of NATAO's media awards. The award is great news for both the growing (no pun intended) local food movement and for NENtv as the portal to the exciting world of community-building. Watch the video here. DAILY NEN FACEBOOK GOODNESSWhether it's a just-announced public space, neighborhood clean-up event, or a newly released community fundraising book, there's no better way to keep up with the latest developments than with the NEN Facebook group. From what we hear, the updates are popular with NEN members. Visit our page and sign up to plug into the action. How can you get involved? Simple! Just visit the group and invite your Facebook friends to join. Click " More " on the left of the page, then " Suggest to Friends " , and choose the lucky recipients. NEW MEDIA DIRECTOR JOINS THE NENInspiring local communities and spreading new ideas by telling stories is what the NEN is all about. That's why the NEN is excited to announce San Francisco Inner Sunset community leader Adam Greenfield as the NEN's new media director. A recent Radio & Television MA graduate, Adam will sprearhead NENtv, whose mission is to bring the neighborhood movement into the public spotlight. He'll be developing partnerships with local media organizations to produce inspiring neighborhood-based web video that will make NENtv the source for the latest and greatest developments. Stay with us as NENtv continues to go from strength to strength. DO YOU HEART SF WATER? The NEN is a big fan of citizen-produced media. Sharing stories through video is a great way to build community and the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) agrees! There's been a lot of press about the quality of tap water, the impacts of bottled water, and the importance of water conservation. The SFPUC is offering prizes to those who can tap into their creative energies to produce a short video about why they love SF water. Why not let your artistic side flow and produce an entry? The contest ends August 28th. Find out more here. STEERING COMMITTEE MEMBER OF THE MONTH: JOHN POWERThe NEN is a big fan of volunteer culture and so we're proud to have John Power on our steering committee. John is executive director of The Volunteer Center, an organization which has worked with individuals, nonprofits, and businesses since 1946 to connect thousands of volunteers with exciting opportunities. John's also worked under San Jose Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren on health and human services, housing and homelessness, immigration, the environment, and civil justice. John is currently a board member of Goodwill Industries of San Francisco, San Mateo, and Marin, and he's also on the board of Volunteer Centers of California. Great to have you with the NEN, John! SUNDAY STREETS HITS THE WEST This Sunday, August 9th from 10am-2pm, Sunday Streets brings car-free open spaces to San Francisco's western neighborhoods. The route winds through Golden Gate Park and along the Great Highway to the zoo, with entertainment and activities along the way. This will be the fifth of six Sunday Streets for 2009. The event has already created significant buzz around people-friendly streets. Don't miss this chance to participate and see the community thrive. Find out more here.
