Guest guest
1) Please check out the attached form letter an East Bay Med Ctr sent, warning women AVOIDANCE OF DAIRY is an osteoporosis risk factor.2) Does anyone know a good e-mail address within AltaBatesSummit.org? I started to compose an e-petition to respond to this, but it was aborted because I couldn't determine any e-mail address (which was required for an e-petition).3) FYI, I faxed the below letter in response.MitchDear Dr. Cardoza, I write you to ask you to correct the misleading form letter you signed (on Alta Bates Summit Medical Center letterhead) stating that "Avoidance of dairy foods" is a risk factor for osteoporosis. It does not mention that there are many superior plant-based sources of calcium! My wife recently received this, and fortunately we know better. Many other people do not, and they might become less healthy as a result of your letter. At a minimum, you should add this risk factor: "Avoidance of calcium-rich leafy-green vegetables, such as collard greens, broccoli, bok choy and kale". The Bay Area has a tremendous diversity and availability of excellent healthy vegetables, as well as restaurants that use them in delicious meals. Many people are lactose-intolerant, and/or were not accustomed to drinking milk, and they should not be scared into consuming dairy. Ideally you should delete or modify your line about dairy. According to data in Professor T. Colin Campbell, PhD’s book The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted, “it seems perfectly plausible that animal protein and even calcium – when consumed at excessive levels – are capable of increasing the risk of osteoporosis. Dairy, unfortunately, is the only food that is rich on both these nutrients. [Harvard professor Mark] Hegsted, backed by his exceptional experience in calcium research, said in his 1986 paper, ‘hip fractures are more frequent in populations where dairy products are commonly consumed and calcium intakes are relatively high.’ ” [pps. 207-08]. Dr. Cardoza: I look forward to your written or e-mailed reply, along with a copy of your revised osteoporosis letter. Sincerely,Windows Live: Make it easier for your friends to see what you’re up to on Facebook. Find out more.
