September 2009

Dear Neil,

Welcome to the September issue of E-PEACE!

In just a few weeks, we'll be celebrating our 4th Annual Texas "Veggin'-out" Days Campaign. Held each year on October 1 (World Vegetarian Day) and October 2 (World Farm Animals Day & Mahatma Gandhi's Birthday), this campaign encourages Texans to "dine out" to support local vegan/vegetarian establishments. Our campaign has been recognized by the North American Vegetarian Society (NAVS) and is supported by the Lone Star Vegetarian Network (LSVN).

As you'll see here in our newsletter, and on our website calendar, we have some great events & outreach planned for the coming months. There are several distinguished speakers coming to Houston that you won't want to miss! We are especially excited to present an exclusive Society of PEACE event featuring Rutgers Law Professor Gary L. Francione, who is well known for his abolitionist position on animal rights. It's important to note this month that animal rights issues continue to make world news headlines. National group Mercy For Animals recently released a shocking undercover video investigation from inside a large egg hatchery, showing a violent & cruel industry where millions of lives are taken. Thanks to numerous media reports (a few are listed below), the world is becoming increasingly aware of the truth from inside the flesh, egg & dairy industries.

Living vegan is one of the easiest, most effective ways to take a stand against all forms of violence. Every day is an opportunity to be a voice for the animals, the earth, compassion and peace. Each of us can make a huge difference in the world and billions of sentient beings are depending on us!

As always, we thank you for reading our newsletter and hope you find it informative.

For a compassionate world,

Your Society of PEACE E-Newsletter Team

Action Alerts

Take Action for Animals, People & the Earth

Keep asking Congress to support the Healthy School Lunch Campaign which would include more vegetables, fruits, vegetarian foods and non-dairy beverages in public schools! (From the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine - PCRM.org) The Healthy School Lunch Campaign is dedicated to improving the food served to children in schools by educating government and school officials, food service workers, parents, and others about the food choices best able to promote children's current and long-term health. Menus in most school lunch programs are

too high in saturated fat and cholesterol and too low in fiber- and nutrient-rich fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes . Sign PCRM's online form & petition asking Congress to implement changes in the Child Nutrition Act that would include healthy vegetarian options.
