Guest guest
Rethinking Plastics Director Stuart Moody is presenting a series of lectures at School for Self-Healing, 2218 – 48th Ave., San Francisco 94116. In Part 1 of the Rethinking Plastics lecture series on Jan. 14, Stuart provided a history of plastics (celluloid billard balls were invented to replace ones made from ivory when elephants were becoming an endangered species in the mid-1800s), showed us how today's petroleum-based plastics create litter, harm marine wildlife and our own species (canned goods, except Eden beans, are lined with hormone-disrupting bisphenol A). He also discussed solutions such as zero waste (BYOB=Bring Your Own Bag), the precautionary principle and producer responsibility. Stuart returns to deliver Part 2, Zero Waste and Zero Stress--The Inner Discipline of Green Living DATE: Feb. 11, 2010 (Thurs.) TIME: 7:15pm – 8:45pm In today's consumer society, waste has become a way of life. This is more than an unsightly problem; we are literally poisoning the planet, our collective body, in the process of extracting, transmuting, and throwing away so many valuable resources. A more elegant model of joyful and prosperous living is available. As a 15-year-old said after seeing a movie on Zen and the art of living, " Meditation makes you smarter, and everyone knows it's smart not to waste. " Come learn five Zero Waste Principles – a set of attitudes and practices which together chart the way to a fulfilling life and a sustainable world. These practices will help not only you but can also be applied to your place of work, school, or social organization. PART 3 of 3: RETREAT: Feb 28 (Sun.), Sustainability from Within.
