Guest guest
Hi, Bob! Thanks for your message, which you sent to the list, about the vegan shoes. About 14 years ago, I got special Birkenstocks with vinyl soles made at a shoe store on Castro Street in Mt. View. I don't know whether the store is still there, and even if it is, the technology for making vegan shoes has hopefully advanced since then, since the soles kept coming off on the shoes I had. There's also a store on Cal. Ave. in Palo Alto that has casual shoes, some of which may be vegan, or you may be able to order special vegan shoes from there, as they seem like an organic, earth-friendly kind of place. Good luck, Shoshana >Does anyone know of any good places (besides Payless) to get casual >or dress vegan shoes in the Bay Area? > >Thanks, >bob ********************************************************************* * Shoshana Bella Billik * shoshana * * --- * billiksh * * http://www.billik.com/shoshana/ * sbillik * *********************************************************************

Guest guest
Another thought, Bob and others, on casual shoes. In case you didn't know, most running shoes nowadays are all non-leather. I don't run, but I wear these very comfortable shoes for walking, travel, and light hiking. Best of all, they're quality, long-lasting shoes, unlike the cheapo ones which I, too, get at Payless ShoeSource for the office. You can probably buy running shoes almost anywhere athletic shoes are sold. The last time I needed some, my sister recommended La Foote on College Avenue in Oakland, and I was impressed by the personal service. It definitely beat trying on every model in the store. :-) Diane Harrison On Sun, 07 Jul 2002 15:49:53 -0000 " bobricchetti " <bobricchetti writes: > Does anyone know of any good places (besides Payless) to get casual > or dress vegan shoes in the Bay Area? > > Thanks, > bob ______________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Guest guest
If you like Birks, have a look around eBay and do a search for " Baumhouse " . They are a Birk retailer in Germany & they sell a lot of brand new shoes on eBay. I just bought two pairs of brand new Birks from them. Even with the shipping from Germany, it was cheaper than it would have been for me to buy those two pairs here in the US. I love to support local retailers, but these guys gave me a deal too good to pass up. Plus, they have styles that we can't buy here in the US. Guest guest
I look at it this way: you only get one set of feet. It is important to take care of them. I am far from wealthy, but I buy Birkenstock sandals because they are good for my feet. If you've never had any foot problems, it might not be so important to you. Also, when you consider what you get, Birk sandals are not that expensive. (There are some less expensive models and some very pricey.) Keep in mind that these shoes will last you several years. My last pair of Birks, I wore almost every day for two & a half years, and I walk EVERYWHERE. Hiking the Rio Grande, camping in the HIll Country, and walking all over my city. I'm finally having them refurbed- I'm replacing the footbed. That's another great thing about Birks: you can buy them once, and have them repaired or refurbished if anything breaks. The footbeds can be replaced, the straps can be repaired or replaced, and in the meantime there are heel and toe taps for the sole. If you really want some cheap Birks, eBay is your friend. I got them there for much less than retail. The Birks I wore today cost me $40 plus $10 shipping. I will wear them for years, and they are orthopedically healthy for my feet. I think that's a great deal, especially when the alternative is stress fracture. cheryll <naturalist_44240 wrote: Yeah, for those wealthy folks who can afford them! Guest guest
i am not wealthy. *lol* i just prefer to spend money on quality. The fact is they last a long time so it is more cost effective for me to spend $50 on a good pair of shoes that will last me years than to buy 10 pair of shoes for $9.99. When you think of waste and environmental impact it makes perfect sense, too. Part of my voluntary simplicity philosophy.... i use less, throw less shoes away etc. i am frugal. ~ pt ~ All among the barley, Who would not be blithe, While the ripe and bearded barley Is smiling on the scythe? ~ anon., " The Ripe and Bearded Barley " ~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~~~~> , " cheryll " <naturalist_44240> wrote: > , " ~ PT ~ " > <patchouli_troll> wrote: > > Birkies are awesome! > > > > ~ pt ~ > > > > Yeah, for those wealthy folks who can afford them! And good quality or not, they do wear out. I do buy expensive walking shoes, they might last 2 yrs and then if I'm lucky I can wear them another year with holes in them, to work out in the yard. Different philosophies, I guess... I am a confessed " Clearance Rack Queen " . I suppose if I ever found any Birkies for a decent price, I'd buy them. But the only ones I've ever seen cost around $70, way overpriced. Thats a good sized chunk of change for a pair of sandals that I can wear 3 or 4 months per year. Thanks, I'll stick to my $12 Earth shoes... cheryll (happily squishing around the house in new $12 sandals :-) You should try 'em....very comfy :-) No, not vegan, but one can't have everything... Guest guest
No worries... i was laughing along with you. *lol* It is summer here and i mostly go barefoot. That with regular bathing, and not wearing the same shoes every day does make a difference on the odors a pair of shoes will absorb and keep. i am a firm advocate of clean feet and letting the shoes air out between wears. Anyway, i used to own some earthshoes back in the 70s. Guest guest
One of my favorite places is online www.mooshoes.com, but they are very pricey (at least for my budget). www.zappos.com has an option where you can search for vegan shoes and they have free shipping and a great, easy to use return policy. Payless shoes has a lot of cheap vegan shoes, although they are getting more and more in leather now as well so you have have to check the tag. Guest guest
Shoebiz on Haight Street is now carrying MacBeth sneakers and Vegan Saucony's which I was pleasantly surprsed to see. I haven't been to Payless in years but they are a good resource, as is TJ Maxx and Target. Mooshoes has a pretty good selection online: http://www.mooshoes.com/category.cfm/Vegan/mens-vegan-shoes And Alternative Oufitters http://www.alternativeoutfitters.com/clothing/vegan/mens-shoes.aspxThe good news is that more and more companies are starting to have vegan options. I just emailed customer service at Zappos requesting they add a materials option to their search capabilities. If they could add leather, non-leather, canvas, cloth, man-made materials, suede etc that would be amazing! If you want to suggest the same, here is the link: https://secure-www.zappos.com/contact.Good Luck! Guest guest
Hi all, > casual or semi-formal shoes that are leather-free, especially around the Berkeley, North Oakland, or downtown SF area Zack, usually the stores that sell inexpensive shoes tend to have non-leather shoes, like Payless Shoes, etc. I'm not familiar enough with men's shoes, but I think some female celebrities have introduced their own line of vegan shoes, too (of course, that doesn't help you!) If you are willing to shop online, zappos.com tends to have a good selection. I have purchased from them a couple of times and found it pretty convenient, even while doing a return. After I blogged about buying vegan shoes at Zappos, I received a recommendation for a site that sells exclusively vegan shoes, and another for ballet slippers (all links archived below) http://www.generationv.org/?s=zappos Cheers, Tammy
