Excerpts from the fwd:One

well-known vitamin D researcher has warned against taking A and D

together because, he says A is antagonistic with vitamin D. But vitamin

A becomes a D antagonist only in large amounts relative to D. The

important thing is to have A and D in the right ratio. Unfortunately

some cod liver oils on the market have a very unhealthy ratio of

mammoth amounts of A to small amounts of D.........

Is Vitamin D a Cure for Everything?

Dear Toxic,

No, not everything.  But it's becoming more and more apparent that D deficiency plays a major part in our epidemic of chronic disease. It's estimated that improving blood levels could prevent 30% of yearly cancer deaths and more than 50% of heart attacks, and these are only two of the chronic degenerative diseases in which D deficiency plays a significant role.

It's very exciting to think about what getting adequate amounts of this one nutrient can do. If you haven't gotten your levels checked yet (I'll tell you how below), I urge you to do so at your next opportunity. It could substantially extend your life, and greatly improve the quality of those extra years.

Vitamin D in Human History

. . . we were meant to live in sunlight

Human life originated near the equator, where sunlight is strongest. As we evolved, we spent much of our time outdoors soaking up this sun and making huge amounts of Vitamin D in our bodies from its UVB rays.

Over time, migrations to the north and south took us farther from the sun. Later, migrations from rural to urban environments reduced sunlight exposure further. Our next migration has been from the outdoors to indoors. Although windows provide the psychological benefit of light, the UVB rays necessary to produce Vitamin D on our skin cannot penetrate glass.

Now we have withdrawn from our once healthy relationship with the sun even more. From being sun-worshippers, we have become heliophobes -- fearful of the sun. We have believed so-called  " experts " who tell us it is unsafe to be in the sun " unprotected " by sunscreen for more than 10-20 minutes.

Since we evolved immersed in sunlight, is it any wonder that Vitamin D deficiencies are rampant, and that this would have an enormous impact on our health?

We began to rectify the situation after 1928, when Vitamin D was discovered  as a cure for rickets, a bone-softening disease. Everything from milk to beer was fortified with D. But when some people accumulated toxic levels, fortification was abruptly curtailed, and an exaggerated fear of toxicity kept RDAs for D much too low.

Now rickets is once again being seen in young children, and the pendulum is swinging back to a renewed interest in D. Rickets only occurs when vitamin D deficiency is extreme. Far less extreme deficiencies do harm, which often shows up as chronic degenerative disease. Recent research has shown that deficiencies are widespread, and that we need much more vitamin D supplementation than the current RDA.

Vitamin D and Chronic Disease

 . . .  some recent findings

Cancer. Vitamin D is necessary for cells to communicate with each other. One recent theory proposes that cancer begins with a disruption of cell-to-cell communication. Since the 1990s, when it was observed that cancer rates increased geographically the farther one lived from the sunbelt, a plethora of research has confirmed the associations between lack of sunlight and cancer, and vitamin D deficiency and cancer. A recent German study found that every increase in 25nmol/L in circulating levels of D correlated with a 34% cancer risk reduction.

Heart Disease.  Heart tissue is rich in vitamin D receptors. Researchers at Harvard Medical School have determined that low levels increase the risk of heart attack, heart failure and stroke by 62%. Inflammation is the cause of heart disease, and the anti-oxidant vitamin D is also anti-inflammatory. Vitamin D also prevents " hardening of the arteries " with calcified plaque by keeping calcium in the blood stream and in bones (D prevents kidney damage from calcium in a similar way). D also reduces insulin resistance, another major factor leading to heart disease. A substantial proportion of " essential hypertension " can be treated successfully with vitamin D without having to use ACE inhibitor drugs.

Diabetes.  As mentioned, vitamin D improves insulin sensitivity, and so prevents diabetes. Lack of D also interferes the insulin secretion. Supplementing with D and calcium cuts the risk of developing diabetes by 33%. A recent study in Epidemiology concluded that those with the highest serum vitamin D levels are the least likely to develop type 2 diabetes.

Osteoporosis.  One of vitamin D's key roles is enhancing the intestinal absorption of calcium. A review of calcium supplementation over the years found it was not very impressive at preventing osteoporosis and fractures unless accompanied by vitamin D. The National Osteoporosis Foundation's new " Clinician's Guide "  now notes that vitamin D " plays a major role in calcium absorption, bone health, muscle performance, balance and risk of falling. "  Further, that although the safe upper limit for D was set at 2,000 IU in 1997, " recent evidence indicates that higher intakes are safe and that some elderly patients will need at least this amount to maintain optimal levels. "

More Vitamin D Benefits

.. . . look for the issues that affect you

Muscle pain and fatigue are among the first signs of D deficiency, whereas good D status is associated with muscle strength, balance, quick reaction time and speed. D deficiency has been misdiagnosed as fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome, and D has been used to ameliorate fibro and CFS symptoms. D plays an important role in the synthesis of synovial fluid and decreases the pain of arthritis.

A previous newsclip has focused on vitamin D's immune-strengthening abilities and how some researchers now believe winter flu season results from a decrease in sunlight and hence vitamin D. Maintaining good D levels is one of the best precautions you can take to avoid bacterial, viral and fungal infections. Low levels of D have been linked with autoimmune diseases like lupus, multiple sclerosis, Sjogren's Syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, thyroiditis, Crohn's disease and type 1 diabetes. Children who receive supplementation from the age of one have an 80% reduced risk of developing type 1 diabetes.

PMS has been completely reversed by supplementation with calcium, magnesium and vitamin D. Infertility is associated with low D. Low levels increase the risk of preeclampsia during pregnancy. Women who intend to nurse should take extra D so they can provide adequate levels in their breast milk. Today, most breast milk is so deficient in D that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends supplementation of children with at least 400 IU from birth. Vitamin D helps with menopausal symptoms and has been used successfully to treat vaginal atrophy.  Polycystic ovary syndrome, an endocrine disorder leading to irregular periods, masculinization and obesity, has been reversed with D and calcium.

Topical creams containing D for skin problems like psoriasis and other difficult-to-treat skin disorders are considered a mainstream treatment, but oral D has also cleared up skin problems as well, including moles and basal (cancer) cells. People with higher levels of D exhibit better lung function. Animals deficient in D develop Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, two forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. D prevents tooth loss from periodontal disease and prevents cavities. As an anti-inflammatory, D is an important part of any protocol for allergies. D is also necessary for adrenal function, another reason D deficiency causes fatigue and susceptibility to infection.

Vitamin D regulates calcium in cells, especially brain cells. Deficiencies contribute to neurological and brain disorders including autism, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's Disease, diminished cognitive function, depression and schizophrenia.

Get Your D Levels Tested

.. . . they should be high normal

There is a simple blood test your doctor can order to tell you your current vitamin D levels. It's called the 25(OH)D test. Be sure you get this test rather than the 1,25(OH)D test, which is less accurate.  Your levels should be high normal. Most people today fall short of this. If you are one of them, take 5,000 IU a day of Beyond Health liquid D3 and keep testing until you reach a high normal level. Like all Beyond Health brand products, our liquid vitamin D is the best of the best -- extremely pure with exceptional biological activity. It is in liquid form because I found in my research that a substantial percentage of us, especially those over age 50, malabsorb vitamin D from the gut. By using a liquid that is absorbed through the mucous membranes in the mouth, we bypass that problem.     Then maintain your vitamin D levels with at least 2,000 IU a day. A good way to do this would be with 400 IU from the Beyond Health multi, 400 from the Beyond Health Bone Mineral Formula, and 1,200 IU from a tablespoon of Professional Formula Cod Liver Oil.

You can dispense with the cod liver oil during the summer months in most of North America if you spend a lot of time outdoors. However, for people who malabsorb, liquid vitamin D may be necessary to maintain normal blood levels even in the summer.

Pregnant women need 4,000 IU a day in order to have adequate D in their breast milk. Conditions like chronic renal failure, gastric bypass surgery and taking steroid drugs necessitate taking additional D. If you are obese, you may need extra D. Obese individuals can have 50% lower plasma levels. Dark-skinned people are more prone to deficiency; the darker your skin, the less UVB rays you absorb from the sun.

Certain drugs interfere with D absorption and metabolism, including Dilantin, phenobarbital, laxatives, cholestyramine or any other drug that binds fats.

If you have sarcoidosis, TB, lymphoma or parathyroidism, or take Coumadin or Warfarin, use supplemental vitamin D only under professional supervision.

Nutrients Act as a Team

 . . . take D with its team-mates

I like getting some D from cod liver oil because it also supplies vitamin A and essential omega 3 fatty acids. Vitamin A and vitamin D work together synergistically. For example D receptors can't function without A.

One well-known vitamin D researcher has warned against taking A and D together because, he says A is antagonistic with vitamin D. But vitamin A becomes a D antagonist only in large amounts relative to D. The important thing is to have A and D in the right ratio. Unfortunately some cod liver oils on the market have a very unhealthy ratio of mammoth amounts of A to small amounts of D. Professional Formula Cod Liver Oil has the right ratio. That's why I chose it many years ago!

When supplementing with D, it is also important to take enough vitamin K and bone-building minerals. Nutrients act as a team. Vitamin D increases the amount of calcium in the blood. Vitamin K and other minerals make sure this calcium goes where it's supposed to go. If you are eating a healthy diet and taking the Beyond Health multi and Bone Mineral Formula, your K and mineral needs will be well taken care of.
