[baarn] Do U have an hour or 2 on 2/27 or 2/28 in SF to help stop shark finning?baarn Just in case you didn't see this -- it's this weekend!

Hello fellow animal lovers,

I am forwarding a message (see below) regarding an opportunity to volunteer to hand out brochures against shark finning; this will be in San Francisco's Chinatown on February 27 and 28.  So far three people (including me) have signed up to do this, probably for 2-4 hours on Saturday morning/afternoon, and I will be receiving the bilingual brochures shortly.  It would be WONDERFUL to have even more people volunteer, so if you're interested in doing this for any amount of time on either day, please email Shu-Jen directly.  If you've never done anything like this before, here's your chance -- and of course you will be with at least one other supportive person doing the same thing (unless you're fine on your own, of course).

So if you're available for an hour or two or more on Feb. 27 or 28, please let Shu-Jen know.  There will be tons of people (assuming it doesn't rain, of course) and it will be a great opportunity to (1) educate people on this incredibly cruel practice and (2) potentially save the lives of many sharks.  Thank you!!

Volunteers Needed to

Help Stop Cruel Shark Finning

Dear HSI friends,

Thank you for taking action in the past to help protect sharks. As part of our campaign against shark finning, we are seeking volunteers to help hand out brochures and campaign materials at a Chinese New Year celebration. Would you be interested in participating?

As shark fin soup is often served at Chinese New Year banquets, we are working to educate consumers about problems surrounding shark finning.

Millions of sharks are finned every year to meet the demand for shark fin soup. Sharks have their fins cut off while still alive and are then thrown back into the water, enduring a painful death from suffocation, blood loss or predation by other species. Sharks are top predators who play an essential role in marine ecosystems. The cruel and ecologically devastating practice of shark finning endangers their survival -- and that of the species that rely on them.

Because there are so many Chinese New Year events around the world, we cannot have HSI personnel at every event to educate consumers, so we hope you can help us by getting the message out at events where we would otherwise not have a presence.

If you are interested in helping by attending and passing out brochures at the following Chinese New Year event, please contact Shu Jen Chen at schen. Please include your name, street address, phone number, and email address, and she will get in touch with you.
