Ever wonder if your food sustains those who grew it? Want to learn more about the labor costs in food production? Want to understand how farmers are integrating their economic and social goals into their business models and compensation structures? Event Details: When: Wednesday, April 7th at 6:30pm Where: Mission Pie cafe; 2901 Mission St. (@ 25th); San Francisco, CA; 94110 What: We will explore different models of farm labor structure and hear from farmers about the history, rewards and challenges of their decisions. We will also discuss how individual consumers, cafes and restaurants can integrate such knowledge into their sourcing decisions and methods. Speakers: - James Cochran, founder and owner of Swanton Berry Farm, located in Davenport CA will discuss the decision to become California's first organic farm to have a labor contract with United Farm Workers, as well as Swanton's succession planning through employee stock ownership. Specifically, Ned will discuss the apprentice model versus the model of seasonal full-time employees as well as the viability of working with volunteers.
