California Residents: The constitutional mandate upholding hunters' rights should be shot down! Some elected officials in the California Assembly and Senate are seeking to convince fellow lawmakers and citizens to support a legislative mandate that classifies the recreational pastime of hunting and fishing as a state constitutional right. With fiscal dilemmas facing the General Assembly, legislation to protect a recreation for a small fraction of the population is frivolous.

It is important to note that the language currently being proposed in this amendment is extremely broad. As written, "wildlife" would consist of all species of animals including, but not limited to, mammals that are regulated by statute or regulation. That being the case, if adopted, this legislation could result in an individual being constitutionally protected to kill cats! Upon first glance, this may seem far-fetched, but that is not the case when one considers New Jersey's recent attempt to reclassify free-ranging domestic cats for the purpose of management and control.
