Guest guest
I'm so glad to see you guys are feeding good food to your dogs. I think the majority of people don't realize that food has a large part in illness & just general unhealthiness of dogs. I call the grocery store dog food aisle "death row". It is also expensive $23 for a 20 lb bag and having 3 big dogs I go through a lot of it. I feel it is worth it. One of my dogs has had kidney failure for the last year but is surviving - we give her IV fluids every other day. Just thought I would add my 2 cents. > > Someone mentioned dog food... And to lighten it up...tell the above to my oldest cat who races to the bags when I come home from the store and proceeds to munch on the tops of the celery and other leafy things. Plus he is fond of raisins. Of course one of the dogs likes bananas... Cheers, Sarah

Guest guest
I have the Whole Dog Journal's, which is a highly respected natural dog journal published by holistic vets, list of top 10 foods (which Solid Gold is one) if anyone wants it. Personally with 3 med. to large dogs I can't afford it so I feed them Nutros Natural. I think it's probably the best you can get at a pet supply store. It has no artificial anything & no by-products (which can literally be the scrapings off of a slaughter house floor). I've researched dog food for at least 15 yrs. out of concern for my dogs' health. They also love several fruits & veggies ( no onions or chocolate, they can be fatal to certain dogs) . A T. of yogurt a day will give them tons of benefits too, it's like a super food for dogs. I have an easy recipe that I make for them. It's called Frosty Paws & it's sold (not mine) in several grocery stores by different cos. I would be happy to share the recipe too, either privately or here. It has yogurt in it. Dan and Alyson McKee wrote: I just stepped into this conversation. Guest guest
Shawna, I love sharing it. They go nuts when I ask them if they want a Frosty Paw! IIt's super easy, good for them & they love them. I hope noone minds but I think anyone with dogs would benefit from this recipe. (It actually started out as a people recipe so you guys can eat them too.) Especially people like us who are concerned not only with what we put in our own bodies, but our furkids too. I double it because I have 3 dogs. You can make as much as you have the freezer space for. I have to say that I was making a huge mess processing it in my food processor so I bought an immersion blender & it's wonderful! I'm using it for everything & it's 1 piece to clean. You can mix just about anything in a large bowl. Frosty Paws 1 large vanilla yogurt 1 T. honey 1 T. peanut butter 1 very ripe banana Blend thoroughly & either put in ice trays like I do, or if you want bigger bites put in dixie cups. Guest guest
Sounds good except for the cat food. It's not good for dogs & dog food isn't good for cats. I don't remember why but I could find it if necessary. tough blood wrote: i started my two dogs on this diet and my 12 year old is dropping weigh and the 6 year old boy has more energy.both have the best coats.first i give my dogs a muti vitimin 6 days a week.liguid minerals at night in their water. on sat i make a big pot of mush. fill with water.i add 2 bags of lentils. hand full of powered garlic 4 large cans of cat food fish or canned people salmon, sardines or tuna. i small package of chicken parts. i bag of veggies cook til done. my dogs love it. i add one hand of different kinds of dry food to mixture.my vet can't believe the different in their health.so i heat water to put on top of cold food.i feed them twice a day cuz i know i would hate to eat just once.i just feed them very small amount at night.my mother says that farm asnimals gets fed twice why not dogs.like i said the older dog is dropping weight. --- dognut wrote: > I'm so glad to see you guys are feeding good food to > your dogs. Guest guest
Here is a recipe my vet gave me for my highly allergic cat: Hypo-Allergenic Cat Food 1 cup white rice 2 cup water 2 lb ground turkey 7 tabs calcium carbonate 1/2 tab multivitamin (I use baby vitamins) Combine first 4 ingredients well in pot so no turkey lumps remain. Bring to boil, lower heat to simmer. Cover and cook for about 20 minutes till rice is fluffy and turkey is cooked through. When cool, stir in multivitamin. Pack into containers and freeze what you don't need now. If turkey is tolerated, try substituting chicken or lamb, or lamb baby food. Try adding 1/4 lb. liver. If calcium carbonate is tolerated, try using bonemeal. This is meant as a temporary measure, but we use it a lot, and the kitties look great. Average serving contains 387calories, 32.3 g. protein, 17.4 g. fat. - <dognut Sunday, December 09, 2001 2:52 AM Re: Dog Food > Sounds good except for the cat food. Guest guest
grapes can also be bad for dogs. I forget exactly what it is-a toxin builds up in them and is bad for them. I have hedgehogs that LOVE grapes but stopped feeding them to them because of this reason Julie
Guest guest
I saw this in the current Bon Appetit last night, and I had just bought some broccoli rabe (I was just going to steam it). This is wonderful!!!! The nutrition is wrong.....the pasta and the broccoli rabe weren't in there, and I didn't hunt them up. 8) JJ * Exported from MasterCook * Orecchiette with Broccoli Rabe and Fried Chickpeas Recipe By :Bon Appetit January 2002 Serving Size : 6 Preparation Time :0:00 Categories : Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method -------- ------------ -------------------------------- 1 pound orecchiette pasta or penne -- little-ear shaped pasta 2 tablespoons butter 6 tablespoons olive oil 4 garlic cloves -- minced 31 ounces garbanzo beans, canned -- well drained 1/3 cup finely sliced fresh sage 1 pound broccoli rabe -- trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces 2/3 cup dry white wine 1 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese -- packed cup (about 3 oz) Cook orecchiette in large pot of boiling salted water until pasta is tender but still firm to bite. Guest guest
Hi John, My dog's on Happidog which is vegan but I reckon a little plain so I add rice, bits of vegetable, a bit of something I'm eating etc. and he's happy with it. I order it direct although the posting charge is a little dear and avoid having to go to pet supply shops that sell meat, toys with fur, etc. I'm at an internet caf so I can't supply you with details but hopefully they have a website. If you have good balanced meals, dogs are fine with that, too, as they're omnivores. Guest guest
Hi Simon, I live with a border collie cross (whippet I think) . He's almost 3 and has been on Happidog since he was a pup at a sanctuary. simonpjones <simonpjones wrote: - Saoirse Soya Thursday, April 10, 2003 7:53 PM Re: Dog Food Do u mind me asking what kind of a dog u have and how long he/shes been on a vegan diet> Simon Platinum - Watch CBS' NCAA March Madness, live on your desktop! Guest guest
Hi, Thanks for that - I'll give Happidog a try. My pair are still quite young, so hopefully they'll make the change all right. (Mind you, a chihuahua crapping half its bodyweight probably isn't as scary as it might be with a larger dog!) John
Guest guest
Hi What do you guys feed to your dogs? Seeing all the commotion about the dog food poisoning and that there is nearly every commercial brand on the list. What next? Need help :-) Barbara www.veggiechild.com
Guest guest
I feed dry food only, my dog gets Avacoderm or Avacedo (I have to look), it's with Avocado and there is one vegetarian kind. The cats get Nutro Dry Food for kittens, i am not sure yet what they will get once they're all a year old. Barbara <urbanveggie wrote: HiWhat do you guys feed to your dogs?
