Please phone your Texas legislator and urge her/him to vote for HB2328, which will close loopholes in animal cruelty law and make it a violation to torture animals or fail to provide the basics of food/water for animals under a person's custody. Right now, horses are excluded from abuse protection under HB2328, so please politely, also urge your representative to include horses in the bill. The legislature will vote on Monday, 4/16, so it's essential you phone no later than Friday. Email also if you want, but your phone call is essential. To locate your state representative's contact information, go to: http://www.fyi.legis.state.tx.us/ Thanks. Margaret

ASPCA URGENT ALERTDear Texas Advocates,As you know, State Rep. Beverly Woolley has introduced HB 2328 torevise Texas' Animal Cruelty Statute. The bill will close anumber of "loopholes" that have thwarted prosecution ofpast offenders. Thanks to your calls and letters to the members of the House CriminalJurisprudence Committee, this much-needed bill to revise the TexasAnimal Cruelty Statute is now scheduled to be voted upon by the entireTexas House of Representatives on Monday, April 16!While we support HB 2328, we are concerned that the bill classifieshorses as "livestock," which does not give them anyprotection from violent acts of animal cruelty. The bill needs to beamended to reclassify horses, so that they can receive the addedprotection afforded to non-livestock animals like dogs and cats. What You Can DoPlease visit the ASPCA Advocacy Center to send a letter to your staterepresentative urging support of HB 2328 and requesting that an amendment be added to the bill that will give companion horses badly needed protection from violent acts of animal cruelty.http://www.aspca.org/site/R?i=VC9XaaHvoGNKdfDxBIcflQ..Thank you for continuing to support the ASPCA and the animals ofTexas!

Here's one suggestion for a polite statement to make when you telephone your Texas Representative today or tomorrow:

"Hello. My name is [your name] and I am calling from [your town] to strongly urge Representative (name) to support H.B. 2328 when it comes up for a vote. Texas needs a stronger animal cruelty law to ensure that horrible acts of cruelty to animals do not go unpunished. Also, horses have been left out of this bill, but I urge Representative (name) to add horses to the bill, as horses deserve the same protection. Thank you."
