HOUSE BILL 2328 - THE ANIMAL CRUELTY BILL

PASSES THE HOUSE FLOOR VOTE !

April 19, 2007

Dear Margaret,

On Wednesday, April 18, the Texas House voted by overwhelming majority to pass HB 2328 - the Animal Cruelty Bill. Your calls, faxes, and emails filled the Capitol offices in support of this bill, and dozens of staff members reported hearing from more constituents on this issue - than any other issue to date! We're grateful to Representative Woolley for her leadership with this bill.

We sincerely thank all of you for your efforts up to this point, and ask that you continue working with us to get this bill passed out of the Senate and delivered to the Governor.

Although we have crossed a major hurdle with the House vote, unfortunately, there were several harmful amendments placed on the bill before passage. A couple of those are:

- Horses still remain unprotected

- Feral cats and stray dogs would be unprotected

- The cruel act of horse tripping would be legalized

Recognizing the severity of these amendments, the next step in this process is to work with the Senate to determine the changes needed to bring this bill back to a true "animal cruelty statute." Once these changes are implemented, we'll contact you again and ask you to contact your Senator with details regarding the bill.

Again, thank you for your incredible efforts in getting this bill passed in the House! We'll keep you informed and let you know when to contact the Senate in the very near future.
