Speak up now for Chicago's foie gras ban! On April 26, 2006, Chicago's city council overwhelmingly passed a historic foie gras ban by a 48-to-1 vote. The ban, which prohibits the sale of this cruel item within the city, made a profound statement against the egregious suffering imposed on factory-farmed animals. However, ever since the ban's passage, the foie gras industry has been pulling out all the stops to repeal it, and hiring high-powered lobbyists to distract Aldermen

from considering the real issue behind foie gras: animal cruelty. Aligned with the foie gras industry, Chicago Mayor Richard Daley has actively ridiculed the law and went as far as announcing his intention to repeal it during a May 23 city council meeting. But thanks to throngs of vocal, compassionate foie gras opponents who showed up outside the city hall, efforts to overturn the ban were thwarted…for now. The Illinois Restaurant Association and foie gras industry supporters are determined to reverse their city's historic, humane law banning foie gras. The next city council meeting is June 13, where the foie gras ban is likely to be considered. Mayor Daley and the Illinois Restaurant Association are

urging council members to repeal the ban. At this point, animal protection advocates from all over the U.S. need to contact Mayor Daley and Alderman Ed Burke (chairman of the city council) and ask them to uphold the will of the people, 80 percent of whom favor a ban on foie gras. Let Mayor Daley and Alderman Burke know that Chicago needs to be known as a city of compassion, not of cruelty. 1. Mayor Richard M. DaleyCity Hall - 121 N. And remember, although emails are more convenient to send, personal phone calls and hand-written letters are taken far more seriously by elected officials and are therefore more effective.
