The horse slaughter industry exhausted every effort to overturn a 1949 state law that The HSUS helped to finally get enforced in the courts -- a law that makes the practice of horse slaughter illegal. But thanks to the tireless efforts of animal advocates like you, we beat them back. With Illinois passing a bill this year to ban horse slaughter, and Texas retaining its ban, the last remaining horse slaughterplants in the U.S. have been shuttered. But our fight is not over; we still need to pass a federal ban. Otherwise, our horses can still be trucked hundreds of miles to slaughterplants in Canada and Mexico where they will be cruelly butchered and their meat shipped overseas as a "delicacy" for foreign dinner tables. Please ask your friends and family to help pass the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. Let's keep the momentum from this exciting victory in Texas going to move forward on the federal front. In addition to upholding the ban on horse slaughter, Texas lawmakers passed several measures to protect animals: HB 916, which provides for stronger penalties in dogfighting. HB 2328, which closes loopholes in the current statute to protect feral animals, stray dogs, and horses from specific abuses. HB 1411, which provides penalties for the excessive and unlawful continued restraint of dogs by way of tethering. HB 88, called Simba’s law, which requires that the Governor’s Division of Emergency Management assist county governments in developing plans for evacuation, transport and temporary sheltering of service animals and household pets in a disaster. These victories remind us that when we work together, we can make a difference. Thank you again for all you do on behalf of animals. You can help secure even more victories for animals by telling your friends and family in Texas to join our online community. The more people we can reach on animal protection issues, the better our chances for future successes. Sincerely,Wayne PacellePresident & CEOThe Humane Society of the United States P.S. For those that don't get it, here's a simple test: If you wouldn't do it to your cat or dog, then don't do it to another animal.
