Farmed animals account for between 96-99% of ALL animal abuse. The number one thing humans can do to help animals is to become vegetarian. Vegetarian Network of Dallas (www.vegnod.com) was born to spread awareness of this fact and to find ways to help these innocent beings.

Interesting Fact: FARM USA was the first US organization wholly devoted to advocating for farmed animals, the most abused animals on Earth. VegNod suggests our members, and others, to FARM's free e-newsletter and learn about how to best help farmed animals. To , go to: http://www.vegkit.org/

Thanks. Margaret

Sabina Fund Deadline Extended to Oct. 31st

The application deadline for Sabina Fund grants has been extended to October 31st, 2007.

Last year, the FARM Sabina Fund awarded small grants to promote meatless eating and respect for animals to more than 20 local groups in the U.S., Portugal, Romania, Israel, India, Kenya, Nigeria, and Uganda. In India and Kenya, the awards were made to coalitions of smaller groups because of the large number of proposals received.

Many of the projects display exceptional dedication and creativity. A U.S. group is doing an intensive leafleting tour of dozens of Midwestern colleges. The Portuguese grant is for the country’s first vegetarian awareness campaign. An Israeli group is arranging a joint storefront information center with environmental and social justice groups.

The Sabina Fund was launched in 1999 to honor FARM President Alex Hershaft's mother who had passed away three years earlier.

Please visit the Sabina Fund website, make a generous contribution, and/or recommend a worthy project or group before October 31st.

Remember the Animals on Independence Day

Every nation in the world celebrates the date when they achieved freedom from their oppressors. In 1776, the American Declaration of Independence claimed the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for every white male land owner. Since then, these rights have been extended to women, people of color, and other human animals. It's high time to extend basic rights to nonhuman animals.

Let's seize the occasion to distribute vegan literature at local events. For free handouts

Book Review: Six Arguments for Greener Diet

Six Arguments for a Greener Diet provides an in-depth look at scientific studies, revealing how a plant-based diet is most conducive to a healthy lifestyle and causes the least harm to the environment and animals who suffer in factory farms. This meticulously documented book offers thoughtful insight for consumers, students, teachers, and lawmakers. It covers everything from chronic disease and soil science to animal welfare. It is authored by Michael Jacobson, founder and executive director of The Center for Science in the Public Interest, and the CSPI staff.

To calculate the impact of your diet and/or to purchase a copy, please visit the book's website.

FARM Heroes

This space features key supporters of FARM and the animal rights movement.

Gretchen Wyler left a successful Broadway musical career in the late 1960s to dedicate her life to the animals. She served on the Board of ASPCA and the Fund For Animals until 1991, when she founded the Ark Trust. In 1986, she launched the Genesis Awards, rewarding contributions to animal protection by media & entertainment industries. Gretchen was an early supporter of FARM, attending our first conference in 1981, then starring in our first fundraising event in Los Angeles. She was elected to the U.S. Animal Rights Hall of Fame by speakers at the Animal Rights 2005 National Conference. On Sunday, May 27th, Gretchen lost her battle with breast cancer. We and the animals will miss her terribly.

Andrea Carvalho joined the FARM staff a year ago. She serves as Database Manager, produces our colorful weekly Meatout Mondays e-newsletter, and manages the FARM/AR exhibits at our conferences. Andrea was active in Brazil's vegetarian and environmental movements and became a vegan at the World Vegetarian Congress in 2004.
