issue for just $5 V in the NewsNot So Super FoodsWatch your language! The European Union is cracking down on casual use of the term 'superfood', according to the BBC. While most of us have come to think of foods like blueberries, spinach and soy as having near-miraculous properties, the EU will no longer allow producers to use the term in advertising without

actual evidence to back up the claims that these veggies really are super. Even without the flashy label, we all know it can't hurt to eat anti-oxidant-packed veggies throughout the day.Dairy Council Loses WeightThe USDA and The National Dairy Promotion and Research Board were forced to cease using advertisements that claim consuming three servings of dairy per day can help with weight loss efforts, according to a recent New York Times article. Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine petitioned the Federal Trade Commission to end the campaigns, "3-A-Day. Burn More Fat, Lose Weight" and "Milk Your Diet, Lose Weight", citing that there is no scientific evidence to prove that dairy consumption aids weight loss. It's unlikely that we'll see advertisements about the outright negative effects of dairy on a healthy

diet anytime soon, but let's raise a glass of soymilk to a small step in the right direction.Oregon Bans Gestation Crates for Pregnant PigsAs if pregnancy weren't uncomfortable enough, pregnant pigs raised for food are often kept in restrictive stalls, usually so small that they can't even turn around. Oregon joined Arizona and Florida in banning the use of these stalls, with a signature by Governor Kulongoski. Pregnant sows won't feel the relief provided by the law until 2013, when it takes effect. Despite the delay, this is a major victory for animal rights as it helps to set the precedent that cruelty and suffering are unnecessary. For more information about the new law, Veggie Event SpotlightsThe event schedule this summer is packed! Here are three of the most exciting annual events, all of which are sponsored by VegNews. Stop by our booth to meet VN editors and pick up a free, stylish VegNews tote bag with your subscription!Animal Rights 2007 National ConferenceYou don’t get to be the world’s oldest and largest animal rights conference without a good lineup, and this year Animal Rights 2007 keeps up tradition by providing some of the industry’s most notable speakers. VegAustin.com offers anyone with an internet connection listings in the Texan capital broken down by

neighborhood, type of cuisine, and lists caterers, bakers and groceries along with dependable vegan and vegetarian restaurants.Eat Your Way to AltruismEver think that more people would go veg if they just gave it a try? That’s the whole idea behind the new website, Veg-A-Thon.com. Participants pick the charity of their choice and raise money by following a veg diet for one to eight weeks, with sponsors' support just like in a marathon or walk-a-thon. It's said that habits form after 21 days, which is conveniently the length of time that Veg-A-Thon.com recommends for a trial run. Go on, see how long you can keep it up!Want to Work Here?VegNews offers internships throughout the year and the next one could be yours! The company purchased all of its equipment brand-spanking new and gurantees no cross-contamination, which comes as a big relief to cookie lovers with food allergies. Enjoy Gak's Snacks Oatmeal Cookies without worry—even those of us without allergy restrictions can enjoy the hearty, cinnamony taste. Long gone are the days of the cardboard-like rice cakes that plagued the wheat-sensitive. Gak's has taken a turn for the cakey with these dense, mouthy cookies which are a far cry from anything flat and corrugated.

Share your perspective for a chance to appear in the upcoming November+December issue of VegNews. honey in your breakfast cereal or energy bar, is that okay, or does vegan mean absolutely no animal products of any kind?Submit your response along with a high-resolution photo of yourself to Editorial Assitant Elizabeth Castoria by Monday, July 30.
